Sri Lanka vs West Indies 1975

At this point, Sri Lanka was still seeking full membership status with the International Cricket Council. They had only occasionally taken on full member teams like India or Pakistan on tours; and had only ever played against West Indies three times prior to this World Cup match at Old Trafford in 1979.

After an uneven first innings, Sri Lanka made remarkable headway in their second innings thanks to an outstanding effort from opener Upul Tharanga and batsman Kumar Sangakkara. Their partnership contributed 141 runs for the third wicket before they were dismissed – helping Sri Lanka earn victory with 57 runs extra and gain a bonus point!

Sri Lanka’s World Cup team consisted of many talented young cricketers such as Bandula Warnapura, Ranjit Fernando, Anura Tennekoon, Tony Opatha, Duleep Mendis and Mevan Pieris; however, experienced players were absent.

After Sri Lankan captain Arjuna Ranatunga won the toss, he decided to field. This choice proved effective as West Indies bowlers found it difficult to overcome Lankan bowlers; and Sri Lankan batsmen capitalized on any errors by Windies batsmen, scoring some large totals themselves.

Sri Lanka won this match and went on to defeat West Indies by two matches to one, marking its maiden ODI series victory as well as its inaugural day-night victory.
