Australia
Australia and India’s rivalry in world cricket is one of the best-known in modern sport, whether in ODIs or Test series. Recently, T20 cricket has added another dynamic; matches between both sides tend to be tight and thrilling, and both countries boast strong histories within IPL cricket tournaments;
Australia won both tournaments twice while India only managed once each. Over the years however, as both nations improved their international reputations so too has their rivalry between Australia and India increased significantly.
Both teams have produced some incredible players over time – from the Golden Age Australian batsmen of Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting, right through to David Warner and Steven Smith in the second decade of this century. Australia have enjoyed unparalleled dominance both ODIs and Tests formats with 10 ICC trophies across those formats won.
But it wasn’t until 2024 that Australia last tasted victory at an ICC World Cup tournament and then followed that up by dominating in the following year’s ICC Champions Trophy tournament. They also enjoyed success on Test soil – winning five Ashes series over time!
Australia A men’s cricket team serves as its representative side in domestic and international competition. Governed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), this squad holds Full Membership status with International Cricket Council with Test, One Day International (ODI), Twenty20 International (T20I), Test match eligibility.
Composed mainly of young players on their way up through national selection ranks with some older veterans also present; its current squad was announced on 12 March 2025 with Jasprit Bumrah being one of its notable inclusion after his Border-Gavaskar Trophy tour this summer.
ODIs
Australia-India is one of the fiercest rivalries in international cricket, playing over 300 matches since 1971 with India prevailing more often than not in their ODI matches, T20 clashes, Test matches, and often high-scoring matches in T20 cricket and Test cricket – including participation at both events of ICC World Cup 2023 competition.
The One Day International (ODI) format of cricket first developed in 1971 and currently stands as the premier level of international competition under List A status. Games may last up to seven hours with each side receiving 50 overs; organised by the International Cricket Council (ICC). This competition serves as a pinnacle event for nations.
ODI matches feature two teams of eleven players each, with the captain of the side winning the toss deciding whether to bat first or field first and utilizing either powerplay or Super over. Batting powerplay consists of three stages, with the initial four overs lasting for four overs before continuing in three five over increments, each stage lasting five overs before starting over again to achieve different target scores.
As such, ODI cricket places much greater emphasis on batting and run scoring than other forms of cricket. Batting orders of both sides are usually similar, and batsmen will usually serve multiple functions such as top order opener, middle-order batsman or lower order batter.
While both India and South Africa boast impressive histories in ODI cricket, neither team has yet achieved victory at an international tournament – however both stand a good chance at doing so at the 2023 tournament which will be hosted jointly by India and South Africa.
Rohit Sharma leads India’s team and boasts veteran campaigners like Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja and Shubman Gill as its leaders. In addition, this squad features talented young talents such as opener Shikhar Dhawan and Axar Patel plus spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakaravarthy who all showcase their abilities on a regular basis.
T20Is

Australia’s T20 squad boasts several talented players who are excelling in domestic competitions. Over its past 14 T20I matches, Australia has won 12 wins outright making them one of the world’s most successful T20I teams.
As some experienced players rest up for Pakistan tour, young players are being called up for international experience and may even get an opportunity to play Test matches, potentially earning themselves an Australian cap.
Tim David stands out among younger players as an explosive batsman known for his powerplay T20I runs this year; his strike rate is the highest among all national Test cricket players.
Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins will also feature prominently in this upcoming series, but will not play all games due to maintaining fitness levels ahead of the ICC World Cup. Meanwhile, Glenn Maxwell is still recovering from a broken wrist while Sean Abbott will focus on Sheffield Shield duties early on in this series.
Mitch Owen and Jack Edwards have made waves during their breakthrough Big Bash campaigns. Additionally, fit-again quick Matthew Kuhnemann and Mahli Beardman will join once their franchise’s BBL seasons have concluded and form part of this squad.
