Oregon Ducks vs. Indiana Hoosiers

Oregon Ducks and Oregon State Beavers have one of the longest running rivalries in college football history, dating back to their initial meeting in 1896 and continuing through 2022 when their game concluded for good in 2022.

Each matchup has resulted in one team taking home possession of the Platypus Trophy; currently tied at 51-51 with Beavers winning seven out of twelve meetings since 2014.

At their most recent meeting in Eugene, Oregon State dominated and outshone the Ducks 31-7 for an emphatic victory, marking their fifth straight win against them and giving them a 9-2 record on the season.

Unfortunately during the game there was an incident between fans when Oregon Ducks linebacker DJ Johnson punched an Oregon State fan prompting an apology from Oregon State Athletic Department.

Indiana put Oregon out of reach early in the second half with defensive end Daniel Ndukwe’s sack-and-forced fumble of quarterback Dante Moore by Indiana defensive end Daniel Ndukwe. On their next drive, Hoosiers quarterback Matt Mendoza connected with Kaelon Black on a 23-yard touchdown pass, expanding their lead from 42-15 to 56-15 with just under five minutes remaining in play.

Curt Cignetti provided his postgame press conference comments regarding Indiana’s dominance in this game and discussed which plays contributed most to its outcome.

Offense

Oregon Ducks offense has never been more powerful this season, ranking second nationally in terms of explosive plays (defined as any run or pass of 10 yards or longer), according to Pro Football Focus (PFF). That number should not be diminished by recent media focus on Oregon’s struggles; instead it should serve as motivation to develop further efficient offensive schemes that make defenses struggle against them.

Bryant Haines’ defense is taking full advantage of their personnel. Indiana Hoosier front seven players include traditional and hybrid options that allow the Hoosiers to run multiple pressures against Alabama.

For instance, against them the defense mixed up pressures by simulating pressures against fire zones or non-traditional tampa (NTT) coverages and by forcing Alabama into constant man blocking without one-on-one matchups being possible.

Indiana did an exceptional job of managing both time and ball. Their defense forced three turnovers and two fumbles, capitalizing on all three for points and helping the Hoosiers defeat four top-5 teams this year, both regular season and CFP opponents.

Curt Cignetti achieved this remarkable turnaround as head coach of an FAMU football program that lost 39% of its games during his inaugural year as head coach. Such changes in college football have levelled out playing conditions across all levels and allowed smaller programs such as FAMU to thrive again.

At the end of the game, however, Indiana ran away victorious; scoring on their very first possession to keep alive any hope for an unthinkable national championship run.

Hoosiers would become the first undefeated team in 2023 with a victory in the national title game in Miami against Mario Cristobal’s team, who have gone undefeated against Texas A&M, Ohio State and Ole Miss so far this season. Mendoza will attempt to capture his fourth Heisman Trophy just 21 miles away from where he graduated high school.

Defense

Indiana’s defense was the difference-maker in an NCAA game featuring high-profile NFL draft prospects on both teams, forcing three turnovers and holding Oregon’s top passer, Dante Moore, to just 177 yards and one touchdown passing.

Indiana’s momentum began early when cornerback D’Angelo Ponds made an early interception that was returned into the end zone by cornerback D’Angelo Ponds for a touchdown – setting the tone early against Oregon. Indiana never looked back from that point forward.

On the opposite side of the field, Hoosier linebacker Darius West was an absolute force in the middle of the field for Indiana. He swatted away two pass attempts and sacked Moore in the backfield while recovering a fumble deep into Oregon territory to help Indiana build up a 25-0 lead at halftime.

Hoosiers continued their rout in the second half, scoring another two touchdowns and one field goal. Indiana’s defense smothered any attempts by the Ducks to score more than 21 points; Indiana eventually sealed their victory when Daniel Ndukwe, one of their defenders, recovered a blocked punt recovered by Daniel Ndukwe and returned for another touchdown score.

Indiana improved to 15-0 with this win and secured their place in the national championship game against Miami on Jan. 19. For Hoosiers quarterback Fernando Mendoza – who attended Christopher Columbus High School in Miami – it marks a homecoming. Indiana became the first unbeaten team since 2023 Michigan to reach this far into tournament play.

Curt Cignetti has led Indiana to great success since arriving as head coach. During his inaugural year, Indiana won its first Big Ten championship since 1967 and made the playoffs for the first time in program history. Indiana then captured their second Rose Bowl win by defeating Ohio State and Alabama during regular season play to earn a spot in the championship game.

Hoosiers’ next challenge will be defending their title against Miami, who defeated Ole Miss in the Peach Bowl to advance to Hard Rock Stadium and challenge Indiana for national supremacy.

Following the excitement generated by Oregon Ducks Football Vs Indiana Hoosiers Football, the Hoosiers enter this championship clash as 7.5-point favourites.

A victory would see Indiana finish the season undefeated, become the first unbeaten national champion since 2023, and deliver the Big Ten its first national title after just one season under the expanded College Football Playoff format.
