Tripura defeated Saurashtra by 148 runs
The hilly State of Tripura had a long wait for the onset of Cricket in the State. Maharaja Kumar Kirit Bikram Kishore, who acquired Cricket knowledge in London while pursuing his studies, used to organize Cricket-nets within the Palace compound at Agartala for Royal family members and high officials. This is probably the reason for the late start of the game in the State.
Tripura rode on half-centuries from Bishal Ghosh (84) and Yashpal Singh (61) to post 298 for seven in their first innings against Delhi in Group B of the Vijay Hazare Trophy at Dharamsala.
But in reply, Delhi dominated with Nitish Rana scoring an unbeaten 94 not out to win the match by seven wickets. The win was their second of the season in the competition.
Tripura defeated Uttar Pradesh by 384 runs
The hilly State of Tripura is not exactly a hotbed of cricket. It was a princely State until independence, and the socio-economic condition of the general people kept the game at bay for a long time.
It was only in the late 1950s that Maharaja Kirit Bikram Kishore, who had acquired some knowledge about the sport while in London, started to introduce it in his Palace compound.
A year later, the first competitive match was organized. Since then, the game has steadily picked up in popularity in the secluded State. Initially, Tripura was an Associate Member of the BCCI but in 1984, it became a full-fledged member. The Maharaja Bir Bikram Stadium in the Agartala city is the home ground of the team.
The venue doesn’t get much cricket and the lecture halls in the adjoining campus wear a slightly deserted look when cricket is on. But on the second day of this Ranji Trophy Elite Group-C clash, Washington Sundar’s iridescent strokeplay lit up the proceedings. The young southpaw has poise, balance and a distinctive quality that some left-handers possess – a lazy elegance.
He started the assault with a couple of punishing cover-drives and then moved up the pitch to hammer through the middle orders. He was aided by the composed Abhinav, who essayed some punishing cuts and glides before being dismissed at deep point off off-spinner Joydeep Bhattacharjee.
The other two batsmen, Ganesh Satish and Wriddhiman Saha, struggled to stay alive against the onslaught. It was only when Vyshak breached the defence of Chatterjee and then ran out Debnath that Tripura slipped to 137 for nine. Kaverappa then excavated the lower order with four more wickets to help Karnataka clinch a comfortable 29-run victory. The win also helped the visitors reclaim top spot on the table, a place that they lost last week.
Tripura defeated Jharkhand
Tripura is the tiniest sister of the North East and is a hilly State. The State used to be a princely State before Independence and the socio-economic condition of the general people at that time prevented the popularization of Cricket in the State.
The game has now made its presence felt in the State, with the Tripura Cricket Team competing in Indian domestic cricket tournaments. In a Ranji Trophy Plate A match against Jharkhand, Tripura were staring at defeat on day two after being reduced to 50 for four. Varun Aaron ripped through the Tripura line-up with the new ball, picking up five wickets in 10 overs. Only Wilkin Mota could provide some resistance with a gritty 24.
