England under the leadership of Sherwell traveled to South Africa for a 5-match official Test series and were successful in outmatching South Africans despite their improvement as an overall team, but could not match England led by Schwarz, White and Vogler in terms of overall quality.
Matthew Breetzke enjoyed an outstanding start to his ODI career, posting a 147-run fourth-wicket partnership with Tristan Stubbs before Jofra Archer took 6-52 with the ball.
Tests
England men’s tour of South Africa in 2026/27 will include four Test series; these will take place at Wanderers Stadium and SuperSport Park; Newlands; Boland Parks will all host tests as part of this adventure. England will also play one-off Tests in Zimbabwe following the International Cricket Council (ICC)’s decision to scrap its two-Test requirement to qualify for World Test Championship status (WTC). These one-off matches may become an annual fixture. This change, designed to encourage more matches for smaller cricket boards and increase broadcast rights revenue, fits with the ECB’s goal of protecting cricket’s oldest form. However, the ECB wants to maintain a balanced schedule by hosting more five-Test series at home – even if that means touring non-traditional opponents like Afghanistan and Zimbabwe – this marks a change from their previous plan of touring Australia and India every four years with full Test series.
ODIs
England cricket team vs south africa national cricket team timeline levelled the series 1-0 heading into Lord’s, where England made an incredible comeback to win in astonishing fashion despite scoring just 13 runs! South Africa were left completely confused. It was one of the lowest scoring ODI matches ever played and left them bemused as they stared bemusedly on as England triumphantly marched forward to win spectacularly despite this odd result.
England were bowled out for just 215 in their opening innings, despite Jos Buttler and Jacob Bethell both scoring half-centuries. Nonetheless, they mounted an effort in their second innings with Joe Root scoring another fifty and Bethell reaching his career-best 84 not out before both being bowled by Lungi Ngidi for 325 runs adrift. Unfortunately for them both though, Ngidi took seven more wickets from them all before sending back England home in defeat.
South Africa experienced difficulty with their second attempt to chase 415 runs after Wiaan Mulder and Aiden Markram both fell for ducks early on, however Nandre Burger (3-67) struck back to reduce the deficit to just 73 runs with Matthew Breetzke and Codi Yusuf being taken care of while Ryan Rickelton and Jofra Archer shared in an unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 77 runs between wickets five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten and eleven respectively.
But England kept scoring, with Jos Buttler’s six and four giving hope of an unlikely comeback. However, Ngidi struck twice in the final over, including with an outstanding delivery that got rid of Markram (caught at point for one-off fifty). Archer and Will Jacks added another 59 for the sixth wicket before Ngidi struck again by taking out Jos Buttler for just five runs short of their target.
Archer scored his seventh ODI hat-trick in nine appearances since April 2004 at Lord’s, becoming the first English bowler since Ian Bell to accomplish such a feat since being bowled out against Australia by Australian Ian Bell in 2004. Even more astounding, only eight bowlers in history have managed three consecutive wickets – most recently Pakistan’s Shoaib Malik who hit three during World Cup 2015 was first to do it as well as becoming both youngest player ever with just 20 years and 183 days old Shoaib Malik being first player ever and youngest ever at 20 years and 183 days old!
T20Is
England cricket team vs south africa national cricket team timeline will compete in a four-match T20I series during their winter tour of each other’s respective nations, starting on 17 December at Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg and concluding at Manguang Oval in Bloemfontein between 23 and 26 December, where both Sonny Baker and Codi Yusuf will make their T20I debuts for South Africa.
ICC Champions Trophy
The ICC Champions Trophy is an annual limited overs international cricket tournament organised by the International Cricket Council. It is a knockout competition featuring eight teams competing in groups of four; only the top two from each group advance to the semi-finals. Initially only full members participated; since 2004 associate members also participate. It takes place over a two week period with every team playing three matches against their competition.
South Africa took control early and crushed their hosts into submission with Heinrich Klaasen and Rassie van der Dussen both hitting half-centuries en route to an unbroken third-wicket stand of 127 runs. Jos Buttler had an uncertain start as he edged Kagiso Rabada delivery onto slip, only for him to quickly recover to reach fifty for this format since April 2016.
Ben Duckett looked on track to extend his scoring until he attempted a pull shot off Lungi Ngidi and was caught at mid-on. Ben Duckett then repeated this error by trying to hook Ngidi for a boundary, only to be caught at long-on instead.
Keshav Maharaj proved effective during the middle overs, while Wiaan Mulder took five wickets at the death to seal England’s worst one-day result at home and ended Buttler’s disappointing streak as captain.
Australia and New Zealand will meet for their semi-final on Sunday in Dubai, while Pakistan take on India in the second semi-final. The final will then be hosted at Edgbaston on June 23 and feature winners of each group playing each other one-off matches.
South Africa, as host nation, have yet to win the Champions Trophy but have reached three finals, most recently in 1998 when Pakistan beat them and went on to claim victory that year. Since 1999, seven different countries have hosted this event with England hosting it three times and still never winning it; their last time competing in a final was back in 2002.
