Ireland National Cricket Team

Ireland are taking on an enormous test this week when they take on Afghanistan in five one-day internationals, under new head coach Gary Wilson’s watchful eye. Wilson hopes the series can help his side towards qualifying for the 2024 World Cup tournament.

Ireland was granted full membership status of the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 2017, marking a major milestone for the Ireland National Cricket Team, and participated in their inaugural ODI World Cup that same year.

Ireland’s cricket story is an incredible triumph of an underdog over odds. A perfect example is Ireland’s national cricket team, which competes across all three formats of cricket. On 22 June 2017, Ireland was granted Full Membership status by the International Cricket Council and became eligible to compete as full participants in world-class Test tournaments after previously competing as an associate member in ICC Test Championship tournaments.

Ireland boasts an outstanding record in one-day and Twenty20 internationals, having made their World Cup debut against Pakistan on St Patrick’s Day 2007 before Kevin O’Brien scored his incredible century against England four years later while chasing down 328 runs chasing down. These early triumphs marked Ireland’s progress toward its current prominence.

Ireland’s success at ODI cricket wasn’t without challenges, though. Ireland has only limited international cricket venues available for hosting larger matches; financial constraints also become an issue as staging an ODI costs approximately one million euros compared to approximately EUR200,000 for staging Test matches in England.

As a result, top cricket players often opt to sign county contracts in England instead. Recently however, funding was approved for building a new stadium in Dublin to host the 2028 T20 World Cup tournament.

Ireland boasts several strong domestic leagues and clubs that compete both locally and in international tournaments, drawing players from different national backgrounds. Cricketing culture in Ireland is rich and vibrant; many Irish cricketers hail from other nations. Cricket is becoming more and more popular with young people here as participation numbers keep on increasing.

Formats

Cricket has been played in Ireland since at least the 18th century, although its popularity waned during the late 1800s as Gaelic sports like hurling and football grew more popular.

In 1980, however, Ireland established their first national one-day team and began competing regularly in international matches – winning 11 out of 16 at their inaugural ICC World Twenty20 appearance in 2006. Unfortunately they did not qualify for subsequent tournaments.

In 2005, the Irish Cricket Board took steps to modernise cricket in Ireland by creating the National Cricket Academy to foster young talent and then winning the Intercontinental Cup (an unprecedented accomplishment by an Associate nation). They went on to secure four victories before losing out final against New Zealand.

Following these successes, the Irish Cricket Board sought and was granted Full Member status by the ICC in June 2017 along with Afghanistan. Ireland have now played their maiden Test match and achieved victory against fellow newcomers Afghanistan at Sharjah in 2024.

Ireland will face England for their next Test match this summer, while their ODI schedule includes home matches against India and a tri-series trip to Nepal featuring Pakistan. They will also participate in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 held in England and Wales; both men’s and women’s teams will face each other during a series of warm-up matches scheduled between April and May.

Venues

Ireland has a cricket team which excels at all three forms of the game: Test cricket, one-day international (ODI), Twenty20 International (T20I), and Twenty20 domestic. Their male national cricket team earned full membership status with the International Cricket Council in June 2017 alongside Afghanistan.

Cricket first arrived in Ireland during the 19th century, although its widespread adoption didn’t occur until early 20th century. At first, playing “foreign games,” like cricket, was prohibited in Ireland until 1970 when this ban was finally lifted; since then, cricket has continued its rise in popularity across Ireland.

Ireland joined the International Cricket Council as an Associate Member in 2006, and after their performance at the 2007 ICC World Cup they gained full ODI membership the following year. At first only playing against full members but through outstanding performances and victories quickly rose up the global structure of cricket to gain prominence within global structures of international cricket.

This summer, Ireland will play several ODIs and T20 internationals – including a four-match ODI series against Pakistan in Dublin – as well as travel to Kathmandu for two T20 matches against hosts Nepal. Furthermore, their men’s squad will face New Zealand in a three-Test series in May.

Ireland has expedited construction of Abbotstown International Cricket Stadium as it prepares to co-host the ICC Twenty20 World Cup along with England and Scotland in 2030. The stadium will have permanent seating capacity for 4,000 people with the capability of being expanded up to the required 20,000 seats if required by ICC T20 World Cup co-hosts England and Scotland.

Irish men’s and women’s teams are in England and Wales preparing to participate in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, playing home fixtures while touring Nepal, Sri Lanka, England, and Zimbabwe.

Players

The Ireland National Cricket Team represents Ireland internationally. It is overseen by Cricket Ireland, which acts as its governing body for cricket. As an affiliate nation to ICC tournaments such as Intercontinental Cup tournaments and World Twenty20 qualifiers, this team competes as part of their regular schedule.

Cricket has been played in Ireland since at least the 18th century, though its popularity diminished during its mid-1800s heyday as other forms of sport such as hurling and Gaelic football became more prevalent. But cricket made a comeback during the 20th century; and in 1980 the first Irish team was established to compete one-day matches against touring sides; they later achieved full membership status from the ICC.

Ireland boasts an excellent record in the ICC Intercontinental Cup tournaments between 2005 and 2013, winning four times between 2005 and 2013. Ireland also qualified as an associate nation in both 2011 and 2015 World Twenty20 tournaments as an associate team but did not progress past group stage either time. Since 2011, they have played 17 ODIs; winning 11 and losing six.

At the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup, Ireland were defeated by Oman in their opening game at Malahide Cricket Ground and went on to win only one match against Afghanistan out of their remaining three contests, ultimately placing seventh overall.

The Ireland National Cricket Team is home to several talented cricketers who have earned recognition on the international stage. Notable players associated with Irish cricket include Niall O’Brien, Andy McBrine and Trent Johnston, who have each contributed to the team’s development and success over the years.
