India’s dismal run continued as they were defeated by Sri Lanka in Colombo for the second one-day international. India struggled to reach their target of 241, and were eventually bowled out after 42.2 overs. Sri Lanka now leads this three-match series 1-0.

Rohit Sharma got India off to an impressive start, reaching his fifty from 44 balls and hitting it quickly. Unfortunately, after that they collapsed rapidly losing six wickets for 59 runs to be in an unfavorable position at 148/6 with even veteran players such as Kamindu Mendis and Dunith Wellalage failing to come through with crucial contributions.

Sri Lanka used deceptively slow bowlers and committed fielders to contain Indian batsmen with effective bowling performances from Zaheer Khan who bowled three consecutive maidens before picking off Upul Tharanga for just 11. His wicket allowed Mahela Jayawardene, who scored an impressive 103 off 88 balls – only for Dhoni to catch him off an off-speed delivery off Zaheer Khan!

Thilan Samaraweera was also dismissed off a similar delivery, although at first he was given not out by the umpire before ultimately being given out on review. Nonetheless, Sri Lanka managed to form a solid middle order partnership led by Kulasekara and Thisara to take them over the line.

Early in their innings, Sri Lanka started slowly but were held back by some brilliant bowling from India. Their middle order proved invaluable though and scored 91 runs over 10 overs including 63 in their batting powerplay overs.

Axar Patel attempts to hit his first ball for four but doesn’t get enough bat on it, then attempts to pull another but gets completely out of shape and twists his ankle in the process, leading to play being temporarily halted for two minutes while treatment is given.

Indian bowlers were powerless against Sri Lanka’s batsmen. Unable to contain run rate, India’s batting line up collapsed; Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, and Mohammed Siraj each took one wicket for visitors.

Axar returns with his attack and immediately bowls a maiden over. Although the ball dips slightly, Siraj attempts a slog sweep off Axar but misses, before working it towards leg stump but gets an edge which leads to his being caught at gully.

Pathum Nissanka and Avishka Fernando have formed an excellent middle batting partnership, scoring 89 in just 19.5 overs as a team and hitting several boundaries as well.

Siraj is back into the attack and gives away only two runs from his over. This time around he plans on keeping it shorter by targeting the stumps for maximum effect on batsmen.

Nissanka strikes out to play an attractive slog sweep off a spinner and is rewarded with four runs off it. He then pushes another short delivery down to long on for another single run.

He is then struck down by a slower delivery and loses his footing, falling to his knees before being given out leg before wicket for 96 runs.

Visitors have now fallen to 138 runs in 26.1 overs, losing the opening ODI and series to Sri Lanka by an overwhelming margin. It has been an enormous disappointment as India had high hopes of winning both matches and series against them; now there are serious concerns that need addressing if they wish to remain successful in future. Furthermore, such losses severely damage India’s image – they will take some time before rebounding from such heavy defeat.

India: 59 runs

Even after Rohit Sharma played an admirable innings supported by Shubman Gill, half their side is gone leaving Axar Patel and KL Rahul with no choice but to show great resilience in order to bring India close to reaching their target.

Wanindu Hasaranga bowls a full and off googly full and on off and Mohammed Siraj attempts to play it across the line but gets beat on the outside edge, sending the ball spinning away before striking the off pole for six. India now 8 down with 20 runs needed.

Axar Patel and KL Rahul have embarked on a fruitful partnership. Patel already scored 50 in this match and now stands just four short of reaching his seventh ODI century. Reaching this landmark by hitting four off delivery of 13th over, becoming eighth Indian batsman to achieve such an achievement in six times!

Charith Asalanka won the toss and elected to bat first at Colombo. Pathum Nissanka and Avishka Fernando laid down an aggressive target, setting a solid opening stand of 96 runs with Avishka Fernando contributing 59 of them. Unfortunately, middle order collapsed under pressure from spinners as Sri Lanka were all out for 248 runs after 50 overs; debutant Riyan Parag’s three-wicket haul couldn’t prevent defeat; series now even at 1-1 with third ODI scheduled for tomorrow at R Premadasa Stadium; defeat also marked India’s first loss since 27 years!

Sri Lanka: 59 runs

Sri Lanka staged a remarkable comeback after conceding their opening wicket. Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis provided an incredible opening stand of 97 runs in 11.1 overs, but were ultimately not able to finish off their task before India’s bowlers forced their batsmen back onto the back foot by bowling tight lines that forced middle order collapse; eventually India won by four wickets with 4 overs remaining.

Sri Lanka won the toss and decided to bat first in the second ODI against India, amassing 231 runs before India could chase it down. Dunith Wellalage led their charge with an unbeaten 67 from 65 balls; Theekshana Mendis made key contributions.

Kuldeep Yadav opened up the over with two maiden deliveries before striking with his third delivery, taking a wicket off Mendis via short ball delivery near the rope. On his next short ball delivery Mendis tried to pull but missed, leading to another LBW dismissal from Yadav.

Riyan Parag opened his over with a wide. Mendis and Asalanka stood their ground against most deliveries as Riyan struggled to find gaps for his deliveries. Mendis hit one boundary before driving for one run before Asalanka hit a single through mid-off before the over ended.

Jeffrey Vandersay of Sri Lanka bowls the next over and allows two singles. When he throws slower deliveries, Mendis pushes for singles before trying a slog sweep that resulted in six.
