England XI

Gareth Southgate will have much at stake tonight against Brazil in their match, not only as part of his squad’s buildup for Euro 2024 but also to see how the Three Lions perform against an elite opponent.

The Three Lions will be missing several regular players for their trip to Wembley this month, such as Jack Grealish and Bukayo Saka. However, that does present other members of their squad an opportunity to stake their claim as Wembley openers: Ivan Toney will compete with Ollie Watkins to become Harry Kane’s backup while Cole Palmer and Phil Foden could also prove valuable as wide support options.

England’s front line boasts plenty of depth this season and should start featuring Danny Rose, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho as early as possible. These young stars are amongst the Premier League’s most promising youngsters and need to step up their performances if they want to join England in Germany next month.

Both teams started slowly, taking 13 minutes before either team had an attempt at scoring. Lucas Paqueta sent Vinicius Jr through on goal but his shot was blocked by Kyle Walker before it could go in.

Second half play was more exciting with two substitutions being made; first was Douglas Luiz coming on for Raphinha, followed by Savio who is making his Manchester City debut by replacing Guimaraes. Shortly afterwards Kobbie Mainoo came in place of Gallagher while Gordon switched with Rashford for Gallagher.

Brazil XI

Brazil are revered as one of the greatest teams ever assembled, boasting five World Cup victories to their name. However, even such an illustrious history doesn’t shield them from difficulties; after an unsuccessful start to 2026 World Cup qualifying campaigns under Dorival Junior they now face an uphill struggle just to survive qualifying campaigns.

Vinicius Jr will likely start on the left of Real Madrid’s front three and is likely to be joined by Rodrygo who made an impactful comeback from injury recently, while promising youngster Endrick should add pace and speed to Brazilian forward line.

On defense, Marquinhos and Eder Militao should form a formidable combination in central defense. Both players are in fine form for their respective clubs; Marquinhos has led in terms of tackles won this season.

Fullback selection remains more uncertain, though Arsenal’s Lucas Paqueta and Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimaraes both could make their case to start in these positions if needed; Wolverhampton Wanderers duo Andre or Gerson could fill any vacancies left over from either player if necessary.

Goalkeeping-wise, Alisson should remain as Brazil’s starting goalkeeper with Danilo acting as his backup. Both have kept clean sheets during previous qualifiers this year but if either becomes unavailable then Guillermo Ochoa could step into their roles.

Brazil Subs

English fans looking forward to Euro 2024 and Brazil fans looking forward to Copa America are hoping that this friendly will provide both teams a jump-start. Gareth Southgate has led England to victory against 39 of his 42 opponents since taking charge as manager; though recent international results such as drawing against Malta and losing against North Macedonia suggest some signs of fatigue from England’s Three Lions squad.

England are filled with players capable of becoming dangerous on the break, and Trippier and Danilo could prove pivotal battles at left-back for England’s chances on the counterattack. Additionally, Rice and Foden’s midfield battle could determine how England manages possession and exploit any defensive weaknesses.

Dorival Junior has suffered a fivefold blow with injuries to key members of his squad: goalkeepers Leo Jardim and Bento are out, Gabriel Martinelli is unavailable as is Ederson Marquinhos Casemiro; three uncapped defenders including Juventus duo Danilo Beraldo and Lucas Beraldo as well as Wolves’ Joao Gomes will make their Wembley debuts.

Southgate included two more debutants despite losing Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka to injuries: Anthony Gordon and Ollie Watkins both earning their Three Lions debuts up front; Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo who was recently promoted from Under-21s will also make her England debut playing midfield alongside Watkins and Gordon.

Brazil Goals

At the conclusion of an extremely competitive game, all is tied at halftime.

Rice won a free kick on the right and crossed it to Foden who headed it just over from close range. Later, Bellingham had an opportunity for England from a corner but his header went just wide.

Gareth Southgate’s team have made an excellent start, appearing comfortable with the ball at their feet and working to gain control of it quickly. But it is early days, and they have yet to threaten Brazil’s goal.

Home side Chelsea are in good form as well, despite suffering injuries to a majority of players – such as Gabriel Magalhaes and Ederson being out. Additionally, full-back Kieran Trippier may miss the game due to a calf issue.

Even without some key players, Brazil are beginning to find their feet. Lucas Paqueta gave the visitors a scare in the 13th minute when Real Madrid winger Vinicius Jr got through on goal but his shot was weak – leading Kyle Walker back off the line and clearing off.

Douglas Luiz and Manchester City-bound defender Savio both come on as replacements for Raphinha and Bruno Guimaraes respectively, before Paqueta misses with a long-range effort as their hosts struggle to settle into their rhythm.

England Goals

England top scorer Harry Kane has been left out of their squad for tonight’s friendly against Brazil at Wembley. Jack Grealish from Aston Villa could make his senior international debut against Brazil, while Ezri Konsa from Manchester City and Kobbie Mainoo from Arsenal also remain on the bench.

England kick off their match with an aggressive approach, employing Joe Gomez at centre-back alongside Stones and Ben Chilwell on the left flank of defence, with Harry Maguire, Lewis Dunk and Jarrod Bowen serving as central defenders. Phil Foden lines up just behind Phil Stones while Jude Bellingham and Rice can be found on either of England’s right flanks.

Early on, England have shown good pressing but are yet to create any clear-cut chances. Foden made an attempt at opening through some clever footwork on the edge of the box but his effort was blocked by Paqueta.

Later, West Ham man West Ham turns provider as he finds Rashford free on the edge of the box. Rashford attempts a shot on the spin but it is blocked by Danilo and cleared for a corner kick.

At 67 minutes into their match against Colombia, England made three substitutions with Gomez, Dunk and Bowen replacing Chilwell, Maguire and Bellingham with Gomez, Dunk and Bowen respectively. These changes weren’t too surprising considering both Chilwell from Everton and Liverpool defender Bellingham have both suffered injuries during training this week. Mainoo replaced Gallagher and became 14th player ever to make their senior England debut before turning 19 years old; his first involvement came via a first half header which went over the bar.
