History

Afghanistan national cricket team (ANCT) is the men’s international cricket team that represents Afghanistan internationally. A full member of ICC with Test, One Day International (ODI), and Twenty20 International (T20I) status; its recent growth has seen them overcome traditional powerhouses like Pakistan, Sri Lanka and India with victory aplenty – while Afghan spinner Rashid Khan has become an acclaimed T20 player worldwide.

In 2010, Afghanistan began participating in one-day internationals (ODIs), winning its initial three and drawing one match. Cricket quickly became more popular across Afghanistan during this time, and players like Karim Sadiq and Taj Maluk gained widespread notice for their incredible performances that inspired many Afghans to pick up the sport themselves.

This surge of enthusiasm for cricket triggered increased emphasis on developing the national team. In 2011, the Afghanistan Cricket Board was created, hiring professional staff and creating formal organization structures. Furthermore, it built its inaugural stadium – a 10-over match ground in Lashkargah.

Afghanistan has made progress in its cricket development over the past decade. In 2023, they reached the semi-finals of ODI World Cup by defeating four teams and established themselves as major contenders for future tournaments.

Though successful, the team remains an ongoing work in progress. Although they have yet to win a Test match, they have slowly increased the number of tests played while also exploring various strategies to enhance T20I performances.

Afghanistan has organized itself into five regions, each of which boasts its own cricket association: Amo in the north (centered on Balkh), Spin Ghar in the east (centered on Nangarhar), Band-e-Amir in the center (Kabul), Mis Ainak in the south/southwest/Khost area and Boost in the northwest/West Kandahar areas – each has a representative team that competes annually at Qosh Tepa National T20 Cricket Tournaments.

The Afghan Cricket Board (ACB) was formed in 1995 and received International Cricket Council (ICC) recognition in 2001. Since then, they have rapidly progressed through all divisions within ICC before earning ODI and T20I status in 2009 followed by full Test match status in 2018; an unprecedented accomplishment within international cricket history.

Afghanistan is currently one of the top eight ODI and T20I nations, according to ACB rankings. They hope to reach the top six for ODIs by 2019 and top three overall by 2025; Afghan T20 players have long been recognized as world-class performers – as are those ranked among ODI cricket’s finest teams.

Afghan cricket has continued despite security challenges. They competed in the 2015 ICC World Cup Qualifier tournament, defeating Zimbabwe to qualify for the Super 10 stage of competition and also in ACC T20 Cup, defeating Canada and drawing with UAE before reaching the semi-finals.

In April 2013, the International Criminal Court awarded Afghanistan with a US$422,000 grant as part of its Targeted Assistance and Performance Programme. This money was distributed during an IDI Board meeting and intended to enhance Afghanistan’s domestic programming quality.

In June 2016, the Afghan Cricket Board hired former India coach Lalchand Rajput as its new head coach. His inaugural assignment included matches against Scotland, Ireland and the Netherlands between July and August before hosting West Indies for full series matches including three T20Is and five ODIs in March 2017.

Matches played

Cricket has become one of the most beloved sports in Afghanistan, making an integral part of Afghan culture and rising to become one of its elite international tournaments. Even during times of political upheaval and turmoil, the sport flourishes;

Afghanistan has qualified four times for ICC World Cup qualifiers while also participating four times in ICC Twenty20 World Cup tournaments; moreover, Afghanistan boasts some of the top T20 players such as Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan on its national team.

Afghanistan was awarded affiliate member status by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for their efforts in winning three consecutive ICC World Cricket League Division Five tournaments between 2008 and 2010, making this eventful milestone in Afghanistan’s development as a cricket nation. Afghan success enabled them to qualify for and make an impressionant debut at 2010 ICC World Twenty20 despite both first round matches being lost; their energy and flair garnering attention both from fans as well as experts alike.

Afghanistan began their international cricket journey by competing against Zimbabwe in their inaugural One Day International (ODI) series in 2013, which ended 2-2. Their progress continued and in 2017 they were granted Full Member status enabling them to host their inaugural Test match against Ireland in 2024 despite political unrest within their home nation; their talent and passion for the game helped them excel beyond expectations.

Afghanistan made history at the 2023 World Cup by coming back from 2-0 down against Pakistan to reach the semi-final. This marked their best performance so far and marked their debut appearance in any men’s ICC tournament final.

Afghanistan’s home kit consists of white with blue accents. The Afghanistan Cricket Board logo can be found prominently displayed on the left breast while main sponsor’s logo can be found prominently displayed on leading sleeve during ICC tournaments. Fielders wear a baggy red cap or sun hat bearing the ACB logo, while batters sport blue helmets with national flag displays on them for batting practice. As of late February 2024, ACB have begun testing a new kit design.

As cricket continues its rapid expansion across Afghanistan, the ACB must strive to improve infrastructure and facilities at their facilities in order to keep pace with this sport’s expansion. As part of their effort to increase awareness of cricket across Afghanistan, they have devised a five-year plan aiming at making Afghanistan one of the top-10 ODI teams by 2023, as well as one of three top ODI/T20I sides by 2025.

Afghanistan National Cricket Team qualified for their inaugural ICC World Cup after winning World Cricket League Division Three against Kenya and defeating Scotland by one wicket. Unfortunately, their performance in this competition resulted in early elimination, yet its significance for cricket in Afghanistan cannot be overstated.
