Ranji Trophy

The Ranji Trophy is India’s premier domestic first-class cricket tournament. It was launched in 1934-35, following a meeting of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI; the governing body for cricket in the country) in July that year.

The competition was originally named the National Cricket Championship before being renamed after Ranjitsinhji, a prince from the princely state of Patiala who played 15 Test matches for England between 1896 and 1902. Performance in the tournament is a major factor considered when selecting the Indian men’s national cricket team.

There are 28 states in the country that field a team in the competition, as well as four union territories—Delhi, Puducherry, Chandigarh, and Jammu and Kashmir.

Earlier, the teams represented British-era colonies and princely states, but many of them were forced out of the competition after India’s independence.

The most successful team in Ranji Trophy history is Mumbai, which won a record 15 consecutive titles between 1958-59 and 1972-73. The Mumbai cricket team is based at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, and has an impressive roster of former players, including legendary batsmen like Sachin Tendulkar.

The Ranji Trophy is played annually between the top teams from each state, with each winning a chance to face the Rest of India team—a selection of the best 11 players from the other Ranji Trophy teams—in a one-off annual match known as the Irani Cup.

The winner of the Irani Cup is declared as the Ranji Trophy champion. The defending champion is Jammu and Kashmir. The competition is administered by the BCCI, which has a full-time staff of nearly 300 people. This includes a director of domestic cricket, a chief operating officer, and an administrative manager.

Vijay Hazare Trophy

The Vijay Hazare Trophy is the top level of List A cricket in India. It is administered by the Board of Control for Cricket in India and contested by state and city teams. It is played in a league and playoff format, similar to the Ranji Trophy. Unlike the first-class Ranji Trophy, which is played at the zonal level, the Vijay Hazare Trophy is a national tournament. Its success is often a key factor for selection to the inter-zonal Deodhar Trophy.

The 2025-26 edition of the Vijay Hazare Trophy featured all 38 teams from the Ranji Trophy, divided into four elite groups of eight and one plate group of six. The top team from each group qualifies for the quarter final stage directly, while the two runners-up advance to a pre-quarter final round. The winning team of the pre-quarter final then advances to the quarter finals.

Rohit Sharma is set to play in Mumbai’s opening two matches of the tournament, against Sikkim on December 24 and Uttarakhand on December 26. His availability will give the side a much-needed injection of experience in the top order before India’s 50-over calendar resumes in January.

However, despite Rohit’s inclusion for those first two matches, it is unlikely that he will feature in Mumbai’s remaining league games of the season. The last group phase is rarely forgiving, and a couple of defeats can quickly make the qualification math unnecessarily tight. This is especially true if Mumbai are drawn against the top seeds, such as Delhi and Rajasthan.

IPL

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a professional cricket league run by the BCCI. The tournament takes place annually between April and May, with the final being played on a stadium in Mumbai. Teams are based on geographical regions and compete against each other to win the title.

The winning team receives a prize money of Rs. 100 crore, which is distributed among the players, coaches, and owners of the team. In addition, the team that wins the most matches during the season earns a bonus of Rs. 50 lakh.

The auction for IPL teams takes place in the winter months, before the start of the new tournament. Players who are not retained by a franchise can enter the auction, and the highest-bidder buys them.

The Mumbai Indians are one of the most successful teams in IPL history, with five titles to their name. They have also participated in the most IPL finals, four of which they won. The club’s rivalry with the Chennai Super Kings is often referred to as “IPL Classico.”

After a slow start to their IPL 2024 campaign, Mumbai Indians made a dramatic comeback and reached the playoffs. This was the first time that the franchise had qualified for the playoffs after losing their opening two matches. Their playoff run was boosted by the emergence of uncapped players like Tilak Varma and Akash Madhwal, who took five wickets in the Eliminator against Lucknow Super Giants.

The playoff race is now down to just three games, and the Mumbai Indians will have a difficult task ahead of them. They will need to win all of their remaining matches, while hoping that their direct competitors slip up. This is a tall order, but it is not impossible to achieve.

As Kieron Pollard pointed out post-match, the key is to get off to a fast start. If they can do that, then the rest will fall into place. In order to do so, they will need to be clinical against CSK, LSG, and KKR. If they can do that, then the playoffs will be all but guaranteed.

T20

The winner of the T20 will be decided by the team that finishes first in each group in the Super Eight stage. If a match is abandoned due to poor weather conditions, the team that finished top of their group will progress to the final. If the final is also abandoned due to bad weather, the two teams will share the points.
