England XI: Pickford
Gareth Southgate will have an experienced squad at his disposal as he looks to improve England’s record in this competition. To do that, they must overcome Serbia, who boast some top players.
Jude Bellingham’s early header gave the Three Lions an advantage that allowed them to hold off any attacks from their opponent, even as their opponents found ways back into the match. Although their opponents attempted to come back into it at times, England managed to stay on course and eventually claim victory.
Foden will be an instrumental player for England in Germany. At Manchester City this season, Foden scored 19 goals and provided eight assists as his side won their fourth successive Premier League championship – earning himself Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year honors as well. Alongside Rice, Alexander-Arnold, and Kane he should provide plenty of attacking threat – hoping to build on that fine form to see England advance further at this tournament.
Guehi
Arsenal winger Jack Wilshere takes over in the center as Southgate makes yet another change, giving England more possession and momentum than they had at half-time.
Guehi is an impressive player who demonstrates excellent ball control, as well as being adept at reading the game well – something essential for defenders.
He and Stones have done an admirable job thus far in keeping out Serbian attacks and dealing with their crosses, though it remains a difficult challenge as Serbia poses risks with long balls.
Kieran Trippier will replace Luke Shaw as midfielder alongside Trent Alexander-Arnold and Rice at this tournament, as per Football Writers Association Player of Year recognition following an incredible record-breaking season at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium, when he scored 19 goals and provided eight assists en route to winning their league championship title with 19 goals and 8 assists respectively. Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka should join Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden and Harry Kane in an explosive front four with Manchester City star Foden becoming more involved and likely as Manchester City star Phil Foden is set for greater involvement at this tournament than ever before given his meteoric rise despite often playing off-side from national selection so far compared with City’s rivalry and could become key contributors throughout he can have impact. England won their last tournament victory since 2001 when Foden set new records by scoring 19 goals while setting eight assists. He earned Football Writers Association Player of Year honors after scoring 19 goals while setting off 8 assists during one incredible campaign at Etihad Stadium where he set record-breaking season scoring 19 goals while setting 8 assists en route to being named Football Writers Association Player of Year honours following record breaking season where he scored 19 goals while contributing 8 assists (sa). He was awarded Football Writers Association Player of year honorable mention in 2014 due to his record breaking season where he scored 19 goals while providing 8 assists!!
Stones
John Stones returns to England’s starting line-up after recovering from illness and joins Marc Guehi as a centre defender, alongside Kieran Trippier, Jordan Henderson and Conor Gallagher and Adam Wharton as central defensive pairing. Kieran Trippier joins them as Jordan Henderson provides experience while Conor Gallagher joins Adam Wharton completes their back three.
Early on, England struggle to retain possession and Serbia have several opportunities to breach their rearguard. Aleksandar Mitrovic manages to find space on the right flank but his shot was blocked by Trippier.
Serbia then hit on the counter, with Vlahovic beating Walker to the ball before crossing for Kostic who attempted a long range shot, only for England goalkeeper Pickford to make an incredible save! England made their substitution, replacing Bukayo Saka with Jarrod Bowen; their subs now have an opportunity to alter the course of this match as we approach its final 20 minutes. Meanwhile, Serbs continued threatening within England box; Gudelj was even booked for bringing down Bellingham!
Rice
England held on for a 1-1 draw against Gelsenkirchen with an assured performance, yet will expect more in their second group match against an Austria side that scored most of its goals during qualifying. England have plenty of attacking talent themselves and should prove challenging opposition.
Serb midfielders boasting both youth and experience should prove formidable in midfield, such as former Ajax and Southampton player Dusan Tadic of Fulham while Sasa Lukic from Fulham will likely start alongside Sergej Milinkovic-Savic in a central role in midfield.
Kieran Trippier and Declan Rice will likely partner in central defence, with Luke Shaw playing left back to build match fitness. Gareth Southgate may play Trent Alexander-Arnold in central midfield to maximize attacking talents of Three Lions while Jude Bellingham will likely line up alongside Harry Kane as part of an expansive 4-2-3-1 formation being tested by Southgate.
Alexander-Arnold
Gareth Southgate has named Trent Alexander-Arnold and Declan Rice in midfield for England, with Marc Guehi and John Stones at center back as centre back partners. Kieran Trippier plays on the left while Bukayo Saka and Phil Foden flank captain Harry Kane on both flanks.
England have had the upper hand in the early stages, dominating possession in Serbian half. Foden wins a free-kick that Foden sends over for Kane; unfortunately it was blocked. Mladenovic tried driving in a cross but ended up clearing it instead.
Manchester City star Raheem Sterling was awarded both Premier League Player of the Year and Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year this season, giving him dual accolades at both tournaments. Coming into this tournament with an impressive goalscoring record and set to add extra attacking threat up front for England. Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice should help break down Serbia’s organized defense; Gary Cahill could replace Luke Shaw on defence if needed.
Saka
Serbia is an avid footballing nation and their national team has always received tremendous support. Serbia have participated twice at FIFA World Cups and four UEFA European Championships tournaments (finishing fourth). Their home ground is Rajko Mitic Stadium in Belgrade – commonly referred to as Marakana Stadium.
Radovan Curcic took over coaching duties after Dick Advocaat left in 2014. They were drawn into Euro 2016 qualifying Group I alongside Portugal, Albania and Denmark and won their opening game with a 3-1 win against Portugal but later lost a controversial match to Albania.
The Serbia national football team is a formidable international foe. Boasting an extensive history and passionate fans, as well as boasting talented players like Nemanja Vidic (Red Star Belgrade and Manchester United, earning him the moniker “The Captain”), Aleksandar Mitrovic from Fulham known for physicality and scoring ability and Dusan Vlahovic from Juventus are just three names that stand out.
Foden
England will hope for an impressive performance from Manchester City starlet Foden, as he has scored more Premier League goals this year than anyone else, including against each of City’s rivals and both legs of its Champions League quarter-final win against Real Madrid – scoring both times with free kick goals! England hope Foden can provide them with another stellar performance at Wembley.
Foden earned his debut senior cap for England in 2021 and started England’s opening two Euro 2020 qualifiers. Since then he has featured in 2022 World Cup qualifiers as well as UEFA Nations League.
Foden will likely miss his City teammate Bukayo Saka, while Declan Rice and Trent Alexander-Arnold remain doubtful. Lewis Hall will fill in at left back while Jude Bellingham and Noni Madueke return to central midfield alongside Jack Grealish and Cole Palmer.
Kane
Serbia made up for their slow start in qualifying by coming back strong in their final playoff game with Norway to win 2-1 and book their place at UEFA Euro 2024, thanks to goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic of Chelsea FC; Predrag Rajkovic who excelled for Mallorca all season; and Vanja Milinkovic-Savic, who helped Torino finish ninth in Serie A. All these stars would feature heavily.
Serbia’s national football team is administered by the Football Association of Serbia and represents it internationally in men’s international competition. Wearing red shirts with white shorts and blue socks as a nod to Serbia’s tricolor flag.
Lee Carsley has selected a young England squad to face Greece and Ireland, featuring Morgan Rogers, Jarrod Bowen, Jarrad Branthwaite, James Trafford and Tino Livramento as first-timers into senior selection. Carsley will remain as England manager until Thomas Tuchel takes charge on January 1.
