How will the 2024 T20 World Cup be played?
The 2024 T20 World Cup will see 20 teams participate, up from 16 in its previous edition. Each group stage team will play four games with only the top two in each progressing to Super 8. All games will follow a standard T20 World Cup scoring system, awarding two points for a win, one point for a tie and zero points for losses. In the event of a tied match, a super over will be played to decide the victor. Each team will bowl two six-ball overs in which fielding restrictions vary between powers plays – in case this doesn’t produce a winner, additional super overs will be played until one emerges victorious.
Westfield World Trade Center in New York will host select public viewing events for select game days throughout June, providing fans the chance to watch on a large screen set up on North Oculus Plaza while enjoying food, drink and activities from some of cricket’s biggest stars.

The 2024 T20 World Cup will take place across both the USA and West Indies, featuring 55 matches that begin with Canada taking on USA at Grand Prairie Stadium Dallas on June 1, followed by India versus Pakistan’s game at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium New York and both semifinals at Kensington Oval Bridgetown Barbados.
The US has an established tradition of hosting major sporting events, and cricket’s popularity in its larger economy makes it an appealing target for expansion. Unfortunately, however, cricket has struggled in America due to a lack of strong governance and disjointed culture.
However, the 2024 T20 World Cup could provide an opportunity to change all this. By featuring some of the world’s most prominent teams and players in an attractive tournament format, it could introduce cricket to new audiences while providing USA Cricket with much-needed support.
USA Cricket needs to improve its financial stability and establish clear leadership roles if it wants to succeed. Unfortunately, in recent years it has been marred by internal conflicts and infighting; its board was divided over constitutional matters, allegations of racial discrimination and disagreements on selecting a new CEO; additionally it has not found an ideal home for its headquarters.
