Sri Lankan cricketing history
Sri Lanka Cricket (formally, Board of Control for Cricket in Ceylon ; Tamil:) represents Sri Lanka on an international men’s cricket stage and holds full membership status with both Test and One-Day International status from International Cricket Council. Established on 25 June 1948 as the inaugural cricket board to exist in an independent nation.
Ceylon first saw cricket being played regularly after British colonisation had concluded; regular first-class games began to be held soon afterwards. Test cricket status was granted to Sri Lanka as of 1981, making them one of eight test playing nations around the globe, followed by ODI and T20I international status one year later.
Early 2000s saw the emergence of a new generation of Sri Lankan players led by wicketkeeper-batter Kumar Sangakkara, all-rounder Mahela Jayawardene and fast bowlers Lasith Malinga and Rangana Herath. These players achieved tremendous success, winning major tournaments such as 2014 T20 World Cup as well as victories against Australia.
Recent years, however, the team has found itself struggling to replicate this success and regularly failing to reach the final of major global tournaments.
Furthermore, Bangladesh has experienced several attacks by terrorist organizations against its cricket grounds and as a result had to cancel many international fixtures.
Sri Lanka’s current decline can be attributed to various factors, including the departure of star batsman Angelo Mathews and Sri Lankan captain Lasith Malinga’s more disciplined approach to cricket.
Yet occasionally they still produce spectacular performances like Kusal Perera’s innings against South Africa that is considered amongst one of the greatest innings ever played.
