South Africa vs Bangladesh 1st Test
South Africa defeated Bangladesh decisively in their inaugural Test match thanks to some excellent bowling and batsmanship from both teams, giving South Africa great confidence going into their remaining two Test Championship matches and offering them a great opportunity of qualifying for the World Test Championship final.
The game started off quickly as Shakib Al Hasan was dismissed in the first over for an embarrassing duck, caught by Keshav Maharaj off a short ball from Keshav Maharaj – giving an early indication of Proteas attacking pace and dominance. Visitors found themselves struggling to cope with it.
Kyle Verreynne’s hundred propelled South Africa to an impressive lead in their second innings – eventually reaching 114 as they passed 306 runs for victory. Eventually stranded for his efforts.
Bangladesh responded well with their bat, scoring 146 runs in their second innings before following on and being forced to follow-on by South Africa’s spinners – Senuran Muthusamy took four wickets while Kagiso Rabada added five as South Africa won comfortably.
Aiden Markram made the wise decision by declaring towards the end of day 2, giving his side an immense advantage going into day 3. Additionally, Markram could rely on having an effective bowling attack at his disposal.
On the fourth morning, the pitch continued to favour fast bowlers and the Proteas took regular wickets. Mominul Haque and Taijul Islam tried their hardest with an opening partnership of 95 runs that ultimately saw Taijul Islam dismissed for 97 by Wiaan Mulder; Mehidy Hasan Miraz also fell victim to Keshav Maharaj who trapped him lbw for 99.
Bangladesh batsmen showed resilience despite their difficulties, with Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Najmul Hossain Shanto both scoring half-centuries. But South African fast bowlers used their superior pace to quickly rack up 283 runs in their opening innings and secure victory for themselves.
South Africa vs Bangladesh 2nd Test
South Africa made short work of their hosts Bangladesh team, winning by an innings and 273 runs to claim a decisive series victory. No Bangladesh batsman could stand up against Keshav Maharaj and Senuran Muthusamy’s bowling lineup as both of them claimed five-wicket hauls – marking third largest win margin by visiting team in Asia, as well as largest victory by any South African side in Bangladesh; Tony de Zorzi led with an excellent century for Proteas.
Bangladesh faltered on day two in their attempt to set a record batting total. At 101-3 they had yet to concede any wickets, forcing play to be stopped due to poor light conditions. Although despite valiant efforts they lost wickets regularly and ended with an impressive total of 141-7 at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.
South African batsmen made full use of a good batting track on day two to dominate proceedings easily, taking full advantage of dry pitch that had little seam movement, no swing or steep bounce and only hint of turn to assist their bowlers. De Zorzi, Stubbs and Mulder all scored centuries to give South Africa an overwhelming first innings lead of 304 runs.
South Africa increased their lead by another 71 runs during the morning session as they quickly progressed their innings. Kagiso Rabada was at the centre of this surge as he used his paceman Shadman Islam to extract extra bounce and move the ball both ways on both deliveries – Kagiso Rabada also removed two consecutive bails with consecutive deliveries from Shadman Islam himself, showing just how effective a pair he and Islam could be in breaking an innings open.
Bangladesh were overwhelmed by South African pressure in their second innings and ultimately fell for just 143 runs before they were all out – Maharaj and Muthusamy both taking four wickets each off South African spinners Maharaj and Muthusamy took the scalps with ease.
This match was marred by several unsportsmanlike incidents between both teams involved, leading to various clashes and incidents such as South Africa-Bangladesh players being involved in an on-field shoving incident.
South Africa vs Bangladesh 3rd Test
South Africa strengthened their lead in the second and final Test against Bangladesh at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium by having three batters score maiden centuries, led by wicketkeeper-batsman Kyle Verreynne with an excellent 114, helping reach 485-6 declared on Day 2, with Tristan Stubbs making 106 in opening batsman Tristan Stubbs’ innings of 106. Kagiso Rabada struck twice in five overs to reduce Bangladesh to 21-2; Shadman Islam for an duck was dismissed along with Zakir Hasan for two. New ball partner Dane Paterson had nightwatchman Hasan Mahmud caught by Aiden Markram while left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj removed Mominul Haque for a golden duck!
Bangladesh were all out for 159 just after lunch when forced to follow on and made a fight of it, with Mominul and Taijul sharing an unbroken 101-run stand before both were dismissed – but South Africa closed down their innings just after tea thanks to debutant Mahidul Islam, Nahid Rana, and Shakib Al Hasan’s wickets.
Aiden Markram of South Africa was delighted with his team’s impressive performance and victory. “This series and victory were outstanding and remarkable,” he stated, adding, “Our home players have done tremendously well, which can be seen in their performance on the pitch. We had some outstanding wins at home that will stand the test of time.”
South Africa made history on Wednesday by winning their series against Bangladesh for the first time since their 153-run triumph at Galle in 2014. Furthermore, this win boosted their hopes of qualifying for World Test Championship final as it maintained their fourth position on this cycle’s table with just five matches left to go.
Bangladesh will now begin preparations for a tour to New Zealand and South Africa for two ICC Test matches and three One Day Internationals (ODI). Their record against South Africa, having won five of eight meetings against them thus far, was significantly diminished due to political unrest in Bangladesh; thus an ICC delegation led by former South African captain Farhaan Behardien visited Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium as well as Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram to assess security arrangements ahead of their series.
South Africa vs Bangladesh 4th Test
Kagiso Rabada unleashed his full arsenal on Bangladesh’s top order to put South Africa firmly in control during the fourth Test at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium. South Africa raced out to an initial lead of 202 runs after Kyle Verreynne scored an outstanding century – however Bangladesh rallied under Mahmudul Hasan Joy and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto to narrow this deficit down to 101 runs before bad light brought play to an early end.
Bangladesh top-order successfully managed an initially difficult opening period of their chase before their wickets began falling at an alarming rate. Litton Das was caught behind by Keshav Maharaj and soon afterwards Shakib Al Hasan was bowled by Anrich Nortje – but Mehidy Hasan and debutant Jaker Ali formed an outstanding partnership to take them within 24 runs of reaching their target.
Mehidy smashed four consecutive sixes during the final session to bring up his maiden Test hundred. Additionally, he hit two fours through fine leg and lofted over long on fence for another biggie. Jaker was equally impressive, striking three boundaries off Rabada as well as adding an assured pull shot to his innings.
Bangladesh were ultimately reduced to 281 runs before they were dismantled by South Africa for 281 runs, giving South Africa an unassailable lead. Rabada took advantage of the slow pitch and conditions to claim two quick wickets before lunch – Mominul Haque and Taijul Islam being dismissed with Towhid Hridoy reaching half century and Mahmudul Hasan Joy both reaching 50 not out from Bangladesh’s tail showing some resilience with half centuries from Towhid Hridoy and Mahmudul Hasan Joy showing resilience from Bangladesh bat.
At this midway stage of their series, South Africa have an advantage, yet their victory cannot be assured. They need some miracles to avoid an innings loss and they could use assistance from lower order batsmen if it happens; then this match could see an explosive finish!
