Afghanistan cricket team, widely considered “Most Popular Sport in the World,” is quickly making waves on an international stage.

Their meteoric rise through world cricket ranks has been nothing short of stunning: winning ICC World Cricket League Division 3 in 2008, qualifying for 2021 T20 World Cup qualifying tournament and attaining full Test status since 2017.

Afghanistan may have suffered due to political unrest and an absence of Test venues, yet they continue to excel in T20Is and ODI series wins against Ireland, South Africa, Pakistan and Bangladesh. They reached the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup semi-final as well.

Afghanistan made their inaugural bilateral tour against any full member nation other than Zimbabwe on June 17 – one day prior to receiving full ICC membership – against the West Indies, recording two victories despite their lack of experience at this level – one in One Day Internationals (ODIs) and one draw (1-1).

Afghanistan has made significant improvements in its domestic cricket structures since 2014, such as creating a professional league and increasing funding. The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) aims to position Afghanistan within the top six ODI and T20I nations by 2019, and within three nations by 2025.

The national cricket team wears a blue kit, featuring green, red and black accents. When competing in Test matches, its shirt boasts a white border around its collar; moreover, its main sponsor logo can be found prominently displayed at its center.

2023 ICC Cricket World Cup

The 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup marks the 12th edition of an international cricket tournament organized by the ICC. Afghanistan have shown remarkable progress despite a lack of facilities and training opportunities in their short-format game. At the 2014 ICC World Twenty20 tournament they participated in, they won one match against Hong Kong before losing both remaining matches to fall short of qualifying for Super 8 status.

Afghanistan made their ICC World T20 tournament debut at the 2016 edition, winning one match against Scotland before being knocked out during group play. Afghanistan hopes to improve their performance at 2024 tournament by creating an effective batting order and developing consistent bowling rotation.

The ICC Twenty2-Overs World Cup is an international cricket competition held every four years, featuring sixteen teams. Two host nations and those highest ranked teams not already qualified from ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings not already qualified are among those taking part; eight other nations qualify through regional qualifiers.

In 2024, India and Australia hosted the tournament which featured a new format – consisting of group stage matches followed by playoffs over four days; its winner received the ICC T20 World Cup Trophy as their prize.
