History
The Vijay Hazare Trophy is India’s premier domestic 50 over cricket tournament, held annually between state and city teams of various states in league and playoff formats. Together with the inter-zonal Deodhar Trophy, it forms the top level of List A cricket in India.
Success here can lead to selection for national teams; matches take the same format as One Day Internationals with both innings being batted out during each match.
Established in 1993 and administered by BCCI since that year; Bihar have posted the highest team score ever seen during any contest when posting 574/7 against Arunachal Pradesh back in 2025-26 against Arunachal Pradesh!
Format
The Vijay Hazare Trophy is India’s premier List A cricket tournament. Administered by the Board of Control for Cricket in India, its league and playoff format tournament serves as an essential feeder tournament for selection into India’s national team.
At present there are 38 teams competing, divided among four elite groups of eight and one plate group of six; every team plays each other once; two top performing teams from each elite group advance directly to the quarter final stage while four runners-up go into preliminary quarter finals.
Karnataka defeated Karnataka to secure a fifth title, while Delhi and Vidarbha both saw debutants Priyansh Arya (Delhi) and Yash Rathod (Vidarbha) enter List A cricket for the first time ever; Shabbir Khan from Bihar recorded his maiden five-wicket hauls in this competition.
Winners
Bihar sealed their impressive campaign in the Vijay Hazare Trophy with a six-wicket victory over Manipur at Ranchi in the final of Vijay Hazare Trophy to claim promotion to Elite League next season. Shabbir Khan earned Player of the Match honors, while other team mates also took three wickets each to restrict Manipur to just 169 all out after 47.5 overs – setting Bihar up perfectly for victory; openers Mangal Mahrour (32) and Piyush Singh (21) provided strong starts before Ayush Loharuka took charge to anchor Bihar’s innings with an assured 75 off 72 balls.
Bihar have also overtaken Tamil Nadu to become the second highest scoring team in tournament history, surpassing Tamil Nadu by one score to become second only behind Mumbai’s 574/7 against Arunachal Pradesh 2023; which set an all-time List A total and eclipsed that set by Tamil Nadu earlier that same tournament.
The Vijay Hazare Trophy is India’s premier domestic 50-over cricket competition, managed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India. State and city teams compete against one another in league format for this title; four top teams qualify for quarter finals before qualifying for semifinals of Ranji Trophy tournament – an important feeder tournament leading to selection for India national cricket team selection.
Records
The Vijay Hazare Trophy is India’s premier domestic 50-over tournament, serving as one of the feeder competitions to select players for inclusion in the Ranji Trophy tournament. State and city teams from across India compete in this league-and-playoff style competition, often showing signs of being suitable candidates for selection for inter-zonal selection of the Deodhar Trophy.
Bihar Cricket Team Vijay Hazare Trophy made history during the 2025-26 edition of this tournament by producing an incredible batting performance led by 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s unbeaten 190 against Arunachal Pradesh.
Suryavanshi led his side to an incredible team total in List A cricket history – surpassing Tamil Nadu’s previous mark of 506/2 set back in 2022 – which broke all prior records. Suryavanshi was supported by captain Sakibul Gani and Ayush Loharuka, who both hit quickfire centuries themselves in support of Suryavanshi.
