2. Kerala – 123 all out (23.0 overs).

Kerala batsmen kept up the pressure on their hosts as they piled on more runs to make a remarkable victory in the Ranji Trophy Plate Group ‘A’ match with a day to spare. The win came for the first time in nine years for the team from the State and was courtesy of a superb performance from left-arm spinner Sony Cheruvathur, who claimed a match haul to help them clinch the tie with two innings in hand.

Kerala had a poor start and were wobbling at 15 for three after just seven overs, but Kaushal Acharjee broke the deadlock with a six and then added 51 in a fifth-wicket stand with Debarata Chowdhury.

A few overs later, a cross-batted shot from Tripura captain Timir Chanda missed the line of a Sony delivery and went straight to the fielder at deep square leg. This was the signal for the visitors to change their approach and they did, scoring at a quicker pace to close on 123 for four in 23 overs with a big bonus point to celebrate.

The win ensured that the home side will be in the quarter-finals of the tournament for the first time since 2008. It also gave a huge boost to the reputation of Sony Cheruvathur, who took his total to 12 wickets for the match with five maidens. He was supported by pace bowlers P. Prasanth Parameswaran and K. R. Sreejith, who shared the other six wickets.

It was also the lowest total at the Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore Stadium in Kochi, in any Ranji Trophy match since the 2012-13 season.

For a team that has been out of the Ranji Trophy quarter-finals for three years, the victory over Tripura came as a breath of fresh air. It was Kerala’s best ever performance at the Plate Group ‘A’ level and it came on the back of a brilliant innings by Sony Cheruvathur who claimed a nine-wicket match haul and 77 not out in the first innings.

The hosts had a small advantage going into the final day as they trailed by just 13 runs with five wickets in hand. But they were soon in trouble as the run-rate kept dipping and the wickets started to fall at regular intervals. With the batsmen getting nervous, it was left to Kaushal Acharjee to break the shackles and strike some big blows. He added 83 in his second innings with the help of eight fours and a six, helping Kerala post a challenging total.

The bowlers did a superb job as well, with Sony taking a massive 15-5-23-3, Prasanth Parameswaran 16.1-6-28-3 and P. Prasanth 12-5-26-3. The spinners also played an important role, with K.R. Sreejith and V. A.
