The 2024 Copa America has already provided plenty of high-quality action and surprising results, with Lionel Messi on track to lift it for a second time and an upstart Uruguay squad led by Marcelo Bielsa providing additional thrills.
Chile has struggled to score goals throughout their six World Cup qualifying matches and appears unlikely to challenge for championship.
Argentina
Since 1904, the Copa America has been one of the premier national team tournaments worldwide. From exciting finals and shock defeats to witnessing world-class players emerge through its tournament, to its often controversial nature – like when host countries changed three times during a single edition, leading to tension and even threats from Brazil who threatened a boycott – eventually the event took place in the United States where Argentina prevailed and won it all.
Argentina enter the final phase of this year’s tournament with an unassailable advantage over their opponents, boasting talent from premier European clubs like Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez and Manchester City’s Julian Alvarez – as well as world superstar Lionel Messi who has been performing superbly at this year’s competition.
Uruguay has shown themselves to be formidable contenders for the championship, having performed admirably throughout their group stage matches despite losing only once against Colombia. Their offense has been potent, with young talent such as Darwin Nunez playing an instrumental part for La Albiceleste. Henri Mujica serves as an effective goalkeeper who keeps opponents guessing during games and keeps opponents off balance.
Canada and Costa Rica will represent CONCACAF at this year’s Copa America tournament, starting June 20 with Argentina taking on Canada. There will be 16 teams total, with only the top two from each group advancing to knockout rounds; Argentina have been reigning champs since 2001 and may vie to repeat with 15 titles; they’ll face strong competition in Uruguay, Venezuela and Colombia which have all shown promise thus far in the early rounds. Jesse Marsch may well lead his USMNT side to an unexpected deep run aided by Christian Pulisic’s presence and his teammates if he can keep him healthy until June 21.
Uruguay
Uruguay, located in southeast South America, boasts an extremely high standard of living and is widely considered one of the most advanced nations in Latin America. Its economy relies heavily on agriculture while still boasting an important financial services industry. The Copa America is an annual football tournament contested by national teams from South America. Established in 1930 and originally known as Campeonato Sudamericano de Ftbol until 1975 when it officially changed into Copa America; CONMEBOL governs this competition; winners qualify for FIFA World Cup participation.
The 2024 tournament will be hosted by the United States and Group C will consist of Uruguay, Panama and Bolivia. This marks the first time since 1986 when they made it all the way through to the semifinals that the Americans are back competing in such an international event. It gives Americans an excellent opportunity to see where they stand against other continental sides.
The United States are favorites to advance out of Group C, but will face a difficult test against Uruguay. They must improve their offensive efficiency – particularly in the final third – while at the same time tighten up defensively, as they’ve conceded multiple goals already this tournament.
Colombia
After an exciting tournament dotted with surprises and comebacks, only four teams remain. Tonight they’ll compete for the Copa America 2024 title at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami – Argentina and Colombia are considered favorites, yet anything could happen!
The USMNT was not among them, suffering shock losses to Panama and Uruguay which put their progress at risk. While Brazil and Argentina have shown outstanding form throughout this tournament, Venezuela and Colombia have also contributed in making it into the final four.
Colombia holds the most experience in this tournament, winning their previous tournament back in 2001 despite initial concerns of security. However, that victory did not go without controversy and will remain controversial as more countries join.
The Colombian team has much to prove and will look to avoid further heartbreak by winning this match decisively. This match will provide a true indication of just how far Nestor Lorenzo’s leadership has changed the Colombians, who have only managed one win so far under him but have been playing some fantastic football recently.
There have been early lineup adjustments on both teams, with Jhon Cordoba and Mac Allister giving way to Daniel Arias and Lautaro Martinez. Hard Rock Stadium boasts a strong Colombian contingent whose crowd has already begun cheering. Both sides are currently continuing warmups before returning out shortly for kickoff of this matchup.
Panama
With the opening round of group stage matches now behind us, the dynamics in each of the six groups are becoming clear. Argentina, Uruguay and Colombia have not come as a major surprise at the top of their respective groups while Venezuela may come as something of a shocker in Group B. Argentines have led Argentina, Uruguay and Colombia while Venezuela surprised everyone in Group B by topping Group A. Meanwhile USA Panama Jamaica remain hopeful they may make progress to knockout rounds but still need one final win before Monday to qualify.
United States final match will come against Uruguay in Kansas City. It will be an extremely challenging test and could well determine Gregg Berhalter’s fate as head coach; after blowing a lead against Panama and now needing to overcome Uruguayan defenses.
Panama used physicality and persistence to overwhelm the United States with physicality and persistence. Cristian Martinez perfectly placed a ball to striker Jose Fajardo who took it home effortlessly to bring 12,933 fans in Orlando to their feet – it was the first goal Fajardo has scored during his Copa America career and gave him more confidence going forward.
Folarin Balogun put Panama ahead before the match was over with another superb pass from Antonee Robinson, as AS Monaco midfielder Antonee Robinson found himself unmarked in the penalty area before deftly combining with teammates before unleashing an impressive shot that nestled into the bottom corner.
Los Canaleros’ victory at this major tournament marked their debut under Danish coach Thomas Christiansen and further demonstrated their progress compared to when he took over in summer 2020 (80th). They now rank 43rd globally compared to their start place (81st).
Paraguay
The 2024 Copa America has already produced some surprising results, yet there remains much to look forward to in this tournament across America. Sixteen teams are competing with Brazil and Argentina being amongst favorites; however there could still be surprises from CONCACAF nations; defending champions Argentina are unbeaten so far, but rival teams Colombia and Venezuela have made waves already this competition.
Copa America group stage is often filled with drama, and current Copa America standings demonstrate which teams have the best chance of progressing to knockout phase and quarterfinals. Only the top two teams from each group advance.
Argentina began their title defense with an emphatic 2-0 victory against Canada, thanks to goals by Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez. Colombia then secured an easy 3-0 victory against Costa Rica thanks to Jefferson Lerma’s header and Jhon Cordoba’s goal-scoring.
Paraguay enjoyed their greatest Copa America success during the 1940s under Manuel Fleitas Solich, finishing as vice-champions twice (1947 and 1949) before winning their inaugural tournament title in 1953 with Heriberto Herrera as captain of their side. This victory would eventually come under Manuel Fleitas Solich.
The current Copa America standings display each team in its group as well as an overall ranking. A country’s position in this table is determined by their record in past competitions – wins count as three points while draws accrue one. Rankings are regularly updated after every round of matches are played; since its founding in 1975, this event has taken place every four years and is widely considered the world’s oldest national football tournament.
