India: Virat Kohli (Captain), Rohit Sharma (Vice-Captain), Shikhar Dhawan

Kohli has become an indispensable component of India’s Test and ODI batting lineup since winning the 2007 World Cup, scoring over 4,000 runs with seven double centuries en route. He was named best batsman at 2015 World Cup as well and shows no sign of slowing down ahead of upcoming series against England.

After MS Dhoni left shorter formats, Virat Kohli took over as India’s Test captain and has led them in 14 away assignments so far; five of these victories include a place in the final of ICC Champions Trophy.

Rohit Sharma has been an outstanding performer in white-ball cricket this year, leading the Indian side in 13 of 15 Twenty20 Internationals while collecting four Man of the Match awards. With an appetite for big centuries like Virender Sehwag before him, he can quickly be unstoppable once in motion.

Suresh Raina has applauded the selectors for choosing Shubman Gill as Rohit Sharma’s vice-captain in the ICC Champions Trophy, believing it will serve him well over time. “Gill is known for his exceptional work ethics and leads from the front. With his extensive game knowledge, choosing him as vice-captain was an outstanding move by Rohit and selectors,” Raina noted.

England: Alastair Cook (Captain), Keaton Jennings

Alastair Cook was once captain of England cricket and is widely considered one of their finest batsmen. He took over from Kevin Pietersen as captain in 2012 and helped guide England to their first Test series win since 1987 in India and 5-0 whitewash over South Africa that same year. For his leadership he received a knighthood in Queen’s New Year Honours list 2019.

After an outstanding start in the ODI series against India, Joe Root was brought in as captain for the final two matches as they attempted to level it 2-2. Although he scored 35 and 13, neither game ended well for them and questions were raised as to his place as captain.

However, in the third game of England’s ODI series against Sri Lanka, Cook scored 294 runs to help England secure victory and overthrow India from world number one position. Furthermore, he helped form England’s highest opening partnership ever in Jonathan Trott with 125 runs during their opening innings; though only 19 in total made for England to complete an unprecedented 3-0 series win; ultimately earning him an invite into Test squad – where upon debut in Mumbai he became only the 101st batsman to do so on Test debut!

Joe Root (Vice-Captain)

Joe Root is a right-handed batsman playing for Yorkshire with an excellent strike rate and ability to stay calm even under pressure. He was appointed captain of England in 2017, replacing Alastair Cook. Under him, England achieved series victories against India and South Africa while suffering defeat in Australia and New Zealand by four wickets each series.

Root was at his finest for England in 2021, scoring 1708 runs across all formats – an astonishing total that made him both England’s highest-scoring Englishman ever in one calendar year and youngest-ever player to achieve such a feat in Test cricket. Root’s remarkable performance earned him vice-captaincy for their next tour to Australia.

Root played an instrumental role in England avoiding an innings defeat in both Tests that followed; hitting a century in the second to help avoid innings loss; taking four catches as Australia collapsed for 60 in 18.3 overs – earning him Man of the Match award and propelling him to the top of ICC Test rankings.

After his Ashes tour, Root was chosen for England’s revamped One Day International Squad and played an instrumental role in their victory over India in both of those ODIs; scoring 61 runs while leading them to an unprecedented record total in their chase of 408; becoming the first English batsman ever to pass 2,000 ODI runs!

Ben Stokes

Ben Stokes is one of those players who inspires equal measure of love and hatred from fans alike. His electrifying batting, fearsome bowling, and impeccable fielding make him one of the game’s true match winners – truly iconic in modern cricket.

At 18, Stokes signed a two-year contract with Durham county cricket team in Durham and quickly established himself. His debut for Durham came in 2009 and quickly established himself; by 2010, he was scoring runs at will while taking plenty of wickets as Durham made their 2010 campaign a success. As a reward, he received his first Test and one-day international caps in August 2011.

An incredible innings of 135 from England’s Andy Flower in the fourth Test at Headingley helped salvage a series win against Australia, cementing his place in history much like Sir Ian Botham’s epic 149 in 1981 Ashes series. This performance cemented its place in England folklore.

After an unsuccessful World T20 campaign, England were revived under Trevor Bayliss and Stokes became central to their ODI revival. He formed an excellent partnership with Jos Buttler during the Ashes series that ensued and his heroic batting performances at Lord’s – including scoring his maiden ODI century! – helped England retain their ODI number one status.

He played an instrumental role in England’s triumph at the 2019 World Cup and proved his worth during the final against New Zealand. England were in danger of losing, yet with just 15 required for victory he managed to bat with extraordinary will and talent to ensure they won.

Liam Plunkett

Liam Plunkett, better known by his nickname of Pudsy, has been part of England national cricket team since 2005. He made his One Day International (ODI) debut against Pakistan in 2006-07; although struggling with bat and ball during that game, he took two wickets before lunch before lunch in his debut match – both wickets coming before lunch in match 2. Throughout ODI series and Test series he showed more consistent performance but overall has been inconsistent performer.

2010 saw his return to ODI cricket, scoring an unbeaten 26 against Bangladesh as England defeated them by 45 runs. He took one wicket against New Zealand but excelled more during their final Group Stage match – taking 3-46 off nine overs! Additionally, he was included in England’s final squad for the 2010 ICC World Cup and took one wicket against Australia.

Plunkett led his side to victory against Sri Lanka in the 2022 ODI Series with three wickets from match one, helping their side win by seven wickets. Subsequently he played several more ODI matches despite being inconsistent both bat and ball.

Due to his poor relationship with Kevin Pietersen, who eventually took his place as England captain, Plunkett found it hard to establish regular playing time. Injury hampered his career further; so much so that rookie paceman Tom Curran was selected ahead of him for all 2023 Ashes matches.

Mark Wood

Wood never fit the traditional English fast bowler template – he was skinny, barely 6ft tall, and originally bowled from a sprinter’s run-up – yet made an immediate impact when making his Test debut against New Zealand at the beginning of 2015 summer and was quickly promoted into England’s full squad for Ashes duty.

Wood was an integral member of England’s side and made his presence felt with an impressive 2-93 haul in New Zealand’s first innings in the second Test to help even up the series. Though injured for much of this series, he returned strong in Trent Bridge by taking 3-69 wickets that helped secure victory for England.

His recent four matches earned him selection to England’s Champions Trophy squad and 50-over international debut against India in July – when they will play a five-match T20I and three-match ODI series respectively.

Karun Nair’s exclusion caused some shockwaves when he has been performing well domestically. Agarkar acknowledged Nair’s domestic performances but found it hard to incorporate him into the team; otherwise if space could be found for Nair then it would remain vacant until that possibility materialized itself. Yashasvi Jaiswal’s inclusion means she may well push up Shubman Gill into moving back towards middle order instead.
