Afghanistan vs Bangladesh
Bangladesh must win their match against Afghanistan to have any chance at reaching the semi-finals. Afghanistan boasts a formidable squad led by Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi while Bangladesh are led by experienced skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto and boast talented young batsmen like Soumya Sarkar and Jaker Ali as their key players. Both teams have met twice previously with each team claiming a win on each occasion.
Gaddafi Stadium provides an ideally conducive batting surface and will favour those who elect to bat first. Both teams possess key players that could change the course of the match; Afghanistan are banking on star spinner Rashid Khan while Bangladesh hope Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s aggressive top order play and Mustafizur Rahman’s deft bowling could propel them toward reaching the semi-final four.
Bangladesh struggled early as Afghanistan’s bowlers found the ideal lengths. But Shahidi and Nabi found a breakthrough batting partnership of 104 runs off only 92 balls to give their side an advantageous start in this contest.
Bangladesh were unable to make use of their early success as wickets fell steadily throughout their innings. Shurful Haque tried for a quick six but was caught at short third man before Taskin Ahmed picked up two wickets with an innocuous delivery that went straight to the keeper.
Taskin claimed his third wicket in the final over of their innings by disposing of Nabi who tried to dance down the track but was caught by Sarkar at short midwicket. Litton Das then hit an amazing drive over midwicket for six!
After the drinks break is complete, and with its sheen beginning to diminish, Bangladesh may find it more challenging to score at an increasingly rapid rate as more overs pass by. They still can do it; they just must be more aggressive with their approach if they want to take full advantage of these conditions and their openers must step up big time for any chance at reaching their target – currently they need another 96 runs in 52 overs!
Bangladesh vs Afghanistan 1st ODI
Afghanistan defeated Bangladesh with ease at Sharjah Cricket Stadium after Mohammad Nabi and Allah-Ali Ghazanfar produced stunning innings at the first ODI. Bangladesh were in control at 120/2 at half time but lost eight wickets for just 23 runs as their innings quickly unraveled into defeat.
Nabi broke up Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mehidy Hasan’s partnership to set the hosts back onto their heels, forcing them into struggling against Afghan spinners and their spinny ball. Bangladesh batsmen appeared disorientated by its spinning motion, rendering them incapable of playing their natural game.
Ghazanfar turned the match around as he struck twice within one over to put Bangladesh into difficulty, first by dismissing Tanzid with a carom ball and then Mehidy Hasan with another carom ball before sending Nabi back with yet another stunning delivery in his second over as Bangladesh crumbled under pressure.
Although their top three were quickly eliminated, their middle order managed to steady themselves and take their score past 200 before being knocked out by Pakistani spinners in the end.
Bangladesh pacers made an excellent start, with Mustafizur Rahman and Taskin Ahmed not conceding too many runs early on. Unfortunately, spinners weren’t as effective due to deteriorating conditions on the pitch; thus not picking up many wickets.
Shafiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah resumed play following a short drinks break, with Rahim finding his balance against Rashid’s spinners but soon becoming troubled enough to be dismissed off a poor shot to short midwicket. Mahmudullah seemed dangerous but fell to another googly from Rashid after failing to stop one from hitting him on the pads.
Rashid produced an outstanding delivery to dismiss Shanto as the batsman attempted to hit it away down the ground. Subsequently, Rashid caught Nabi with another wonderful googly that stumped him despite him trying his hardest. With the match hanging in the balance, Bangladesh need partnerships between these batsmen in order to stabilize things and bring some calm into proceedings.
