Ranji Trophy

The Ranji Trophy is an annual domestic first-class cricket competition organized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that attracts teams from each state and union territory of India.

First held in 1934-35 and named after Ranjitsinhji – founder of Indian cricket – Mumbai are currently reigning champions with 42 titles secured throughout history of competition. Each team plays each other twice throughout a season on various grounds across India.

The 2025/26 Ranji Trophy season will mark its 88th edition and feature four groups with home-and-away games for each group.

Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy

The 2025-26 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in India was an inaugural first-class and List A cricket team competition held from 26 November to 18 December 2025, marking its 18th edition.

All 38 Ranji Trophy teams from Kerala participated, breaking several records along the way including highest opening partnership (Sanju Samson/Rohan Kunnummal/Abhishek Sharma/Prabhsimran Singh from Punjab), second fastest fifty by an Indian in List A cricket match and many others.

Vijay Hazare Trophy

The Vijay Hazare Trophy serves a vital purpose in India’s domestic cricket pathway, serving as an intermediary between multi-day state cricket and modern white-ball cricket. As the highest level of List A cricket it serves as one of the primary feeder tournaments for India’s One Day International side – alongside Ranji Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy – with 38 teams divided among four elite groups and one plate group playing each other once during group stage with the top five from each elite group advancing to quarter finals.

Wet weather has caused havoc this season, preventing most matches from being played to their original dates and forcing first round matches in Vadodara to be reduced to 21 overs per side – making it hard for fans to keep up with all of the action while telecast restrictions limit exposure of certain matches.

However, despite disruption, Round 1 produced some remarkable feats of batting. Bihar’s 574/6 against Arunachal Pradesh set a global record and became Bihar’s highest team total ever seen in List A matches. Additionally, Virat Kohli reached 16,000 List A runs faster than any before him while Rohit Sharma became fastest to achieve that mark within one calendar year.

Mibom Mosu gave away 116 runs in nine overs – an all-time men’s List A game record – while Vignesh Puthur managed an unprecedented six catches – another unprecedented figure for this format.

Vijay Hazare Trophy has become an invaluable showcase of Mizoram’s growing talent pool. One of India’s newest states, Mizoram boasts natural athleticism and fitness that translates well to cricket; investment in academies has yielded technically proficient players who make Mizoram an exciting team to follow as their experience in VHT grows; although Mizoram may still have much work ahead in recent VHT editions.

SMAT T20

SMAT (Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy) serves as an essential building block of India’s domestic Twenty20 pipeline, serving as a counterbalance to Ranji and Vijay Hazare tournaments and providing young players with training for its fast tempo and intensity.

Over its history, several changes have been implemented to increase competition and inclusivity – most recently an introduction of an Elite division with 32 teams competing, along with six-team Plate group (inclusion for new entrants from North East regions), with group winners then moving directly into knockout stage competition.

While IPL franchises provide lucrative contracts and global exposure, SMAT provides an environment to test players’ resilience and grit. Selectors carefully monitor performances at SMAT; looking out for skills such as batting, bowling, strike rate, finishing ability and composure under pressure. While strong performances don’t guarantee IPL contracts, they can greatly increase chances of international recognition and development contracts.

Though SMAT remains important, its significance can often be lost amid the IPL’s glamorous glamour and packed calendar. Additionally, media coverage for small states can be limited and it can be challenging for them to gain visibility; but with support and better promotion it can continue as an invaluable proving ground.

The Bihar Cricket Team Vs Mizoram Cricket Team Match Scorecard also highlights the importance of tracking performances from emerging domestic teams and players. Furthermore, SMAT could become a testing ground for T20 innovations before their adoption into major leagues like IPL or T10 Leagues.
