Points table
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have secured second spot in the IPL points table after winning against Mumbai Indians at Eden Gardens and earning their seventh win this season – their first since 2012 against them and within reach of reaching a top four finish.
Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy pulled off an incredible turnaround for Kolkata Knight Riders following a strong start by Mumbai Indians in this match. MI was restricted to just 157/7 before rain forced a reduction to 16 overs a side, with Venkatesh Iyer’s 42 off 21 balls being the key contributor. KKR then started their innings off with ease following such a fast start from MI.
MI opener Ishan Kishan had a blistering start in their reply as he raced through 22 balls at lightning pace to score 40 runs off only 22. However, Narine soon struck back when Kishan fell victim to an elegant delivery by Narine that sent shockwaves through the home team’s batting order, sparking yet another collapse and inviting spinners Andre Russell and others to join their cause and decimate the MI line-up altogether.
Even after their defeat, MI are still alive in the playoffs race. In order to advance further they need to win both remaining matches while hoping that Rajasthan Royals lose one or both of their final two contests to qualify for the last four. At present, both teams are tied on points on the table; however, MI has earned more wins this year than RR. Over the next three days, Mumbai Indians will face both Gujarat Titans and Royal Challengers Bengaluru for two league matches that could decide their playoff fate. The outcome of these games will determine the final standings in the tournament. If Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) prevail in both games, they will become champions with eight wins out of 12 matches; otherwise they may slip down into seventh position alongside Sunrisers Hyderabad and Chennai Super Kings.
Orange cap race
The IPL Orange Cap honour is granted to the leading run-scorer of each edition of its cash-rich tournament since its inaugural edition. Since that date, only 13 players have achieved this achievement – from Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar all the way down to India’s next big thing Shubman Gill; only the elite have managed to claim this prestigious accolade.
KKR and MI had an important match against each other recently as far as their Orange Cap race is concerned. Both teams were in the top four and stood a great chance at making it to play-offs; however, KKR came out victorious, moving ahead of PBKS and CSK to seventh position on the table.
Venkatesh Iyer and Manish Pandey each scored half-centuries, but were unable to lead their sides to an adequate total. Batsmen on both teams struggled with the ball which prevented them from scoring enough runs.
On the other hand, KKR’s bowlers were outstanding in preventing MI batsmen from scoring more than 100 runs; Jasprit Bumrah and Piyush Chawla each took two wickets during this match.
KKR’s victory against Mumbai Indians marked their first since 2012. Now with an excellent chance at qualifying for the play-offs, the team plans on going all out in their remaining four matches to qualify.
Even with their poor showing with the bat, KKR’s performance with the ball was outstanding as they limited defending champions Mumbai Indians to only 133 runs in 20 overs. Venkatesh Iyer led by example for KKR with his stunning innings of 70 off 52 balls.
Rishabh Pant and Sai Sudharsan soared up the Orange Cap standings following their fifties against Gujarat Titans at Arun Jaitley Stadium on Wednesday, while Ruturaj Gaikwad overtook Virat Kohli with his century against Punjab Kings – pushing their positions into third and fourth respectively.
Purple cap race
The IPL 2024 season has provided some gripping encounters and record-setting innings, but one contest stands out: the battle for the Purple Cap is heating up quickly. Bowlers have shown their skill, discipline, and unfaltering dedication in leading their team’s attack effectively; several young bowlers such as Mayank Yadav, Harshit Rana and Varun Chakravarthy have emerged as potential title candidates thanks to impressive performances in big games that have vindicated their franchise’s trust.
The Purple Cap is given to the player who takes most wickets during an IPL season. Last season’s winner was Punjab Kings’ pacer Harshal Patel who managed 24 wickets across 14 matches – this year is likely to be more competitive with more quality bowlers competing and four teams already qualified for playoffs qualifying their fast bowlers, so their remaining spots may come down to net run rate alone.
Jasprit Bumrah of Mumbai Indians leads the Purple Cap race with 27 wickets – two ahead of Kagiso Rabada of Delhi Capitals – despite their poor league phase performance, with his trademark speed. Bumrah has shown impressive ability to outwit batsmen by employing variations and variation of pace to outfox batsmen and win wickets consistently.
As the tournament nears completion, competition for the Purple Cap should heat up significantly. Whoever receives this prestigious honor could make or break their IPL play-off hopes; becoming a huge attraction among fans across India. Winning will garner them a cash prize of Rs 3 lakh as well as inclusion into the IPL Hall of Fame.
Alongside Bumrah and Chahal, Gujarat Titans pacer Mohammed Shami of Gujarat Titans has also made an impression this season, taking 20 wickets across 13 matches, including an incredible five-wicket haul against Delhi Capitals.
Head-to-head record
KKR successfully made it back into the IPL playoffs for the first time since 2021 with an 18-run victory against Mumbai Indians at Eden Gardens, thanks to spinner Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy who reduced them to 139/8 in 16 overs courtesy of Venkatesh Iyer’s explosive 42 off 21 balls which helped KKR rebound after an initial slow start in their innings; but their spinners came out swinging hard enough to dismantle Mumbai top order to prevent any late comeback attempts by their hosts.
Mumbai Indians made an encouraging start with Ishan Kishan scoring 40 off 22 balls on his way to a quick 65/0 in 6.4 overs. But Narine’s crafty bowling brought their innings crashing to a halt, prompting a collapse among their lineup – Chakravarthy and Russell joined Narine as they limited them to just 139/8 after 16 overs of play.
This win for Kolkata Knight Riders helped them close the gap with table-toppers Rajasthan Royals with two matches remaining and extend their winning run to seven matches and break MI’s 12-year jinx at Wankhede Stadium. Furthermore, it marked their sixth straight triumph in this tournament – moving them from second in standings up to third!
Even with their impressive run, KKR needs to win their remaining two matches and hope other teams lose in order to finish in the top two in the table. Their next two opponents include Gujarat Titans and Royal Challengers Bengaluru – two crucial opponents for top-two standings in their bid for success.
MI’s playoff hopes were all but dashed when even with three victories from their remaining matches, they will only reach 12 points, insufficient for a top-four position in the IPL table. Their net run rate has gone negative but they hope to turn things around against Lucknow Super Giants on May 17 – Nitish Rana could make way for Angkrish Raghuvanshi with Piyush Chawla or Shreyas Gopal serving as impact players for an impact batsmen role.
