Team South Africa
South Africa’s national cricket team, commonly referred to as the Proteas, stands as one of the most competitive teams across all forms.
From their base in Johannesburg and playing matches at iconic venues like Wanderers and Newlands, the Proteas attract global attention through stellar performances by both established stars and up-and-coming talent.
The South African Proteas will look to build on their 1-1 draw against Panama in their second international friendly of 2019.
The Cape Town fixture was closely-contested, as Orlando Pirates defender Yoel Barcenas scored first. His strike was cancelled out shortly thereafter by Mamelodi Sundowns fullback Oswin Appollis scoring an equaliser four minutes after restart.
Bafana Bafana will travel to India for two Test matches and five Twenty20 internationals beginning November 14. Last month’s incredible win against co-host India at Guwahati saw David Miller score an unbeaten 35-ball 65, while Dewald Brevis hit his personal best 29-ball 45 for an extraordinary recovery after falling 20-3 after four overs.
Quinton de Kock became only the seventh South African ever to score 13,000 international runs, passing Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers along the way. Aiden Markram produced an eye-catching full-length diving catch to dismiss Nitish Reddy early on and ensure that South African batsmen would face India’s bowling attack for the rest of the innings.
South Africa has demonstrated an increasing willingness to play cricket in neighbouring nations in the past year, touring Zimbabwe 11 years after their last Test tour and Namibia for a T20 tri-series earlier this season.
South Africa Cricket (CSA) is keen on exploring this possibility but needs an ideal window and clear qualification pathways before making their decision; likely confirmation will occur during ACA meetings scheduled in October and December.
Team India
The Proteas will face India in a series of Tests, ODIs, and T20Is over the course of two months from November to February 2022. Both sides have much to prove against one another so this competition should prove thrilling to watch!
South Africa will look to build on their recent loss against India in Test series by winning back their top position in ICC T20I rankings. Their strong squad boasts many talented players; however, in order to realize their goals they will face numerous obstacles along their journey.
Proteas and Indian teams met earlier this year for a five-match bilateral T20I series in India that proved highly competitive but neither side managed to claim victory.
Now both sides will get another opportunity to battle, this time meeting at Mumbai’s DY Patil Stadium three days prior to tournament starting up again on February 4th – two more opportunities won’t pass us by!
Indian team captain Shubman Gill leads an eclectic squad encompassing both youth and experience players such as Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah and Washington Sundar. Meanwhile, Temba Bavuma leads his Proteas’ squad featuring Aiden Markram, Marco Jansen and Kagiso Rabada as stars.
Both teams have made tremendous efforts in preparation for the match-up between India and South Africa. India have been training hard at its centre of excellence in Mumbai while South Africa have spent a month training in Dubai ahead of this tournament. Both sides are expected to field their strongest possible lineup for this contest.
Even without Quinton de Kock, South Africa remain firm favorites to win this series. Both teams boast some exceptional players that should make Guwahati an exciting spectacle for spectators.
Although South Africa have recently struggled, they remain one of the premier teams in T20I cricket. Their ace players such as Quinton de Kock and Ryan Rickelton will pose a formidable threat to Indian team.
Match Schedule
The Proteas, South Africa’s men’s national cricket team, serve as the sole representative for South Africa in international men’s cricket competition and are administered by Cricket South Africa.
A member of the International Cricket Council, they compete internationally across Test, ODI and T20I formats of cricket – their nickname taking its cue from their nation flower: Protea cynaroides or “King Protea”.
South Africa has proven itself as one of the premier limited-overs teams, holding both Test and ODI cricket’s number-one rankings at different times. They have participated in three ICC World Cups and won its inaugural Champions Trophy tournament. While their success at limited-overs cricket was undeniable, their Test game proved more erratic during its early history.
South Africa was initially dismal as they recorded 10 defeats and one draw out of their initial eleven Test matches; however, after a difficult start with only 10 losses and 1 draw they began showing signs of being an excellent international team – most significantly against England in 1905-06 and again during their subsequent tour in 1909-10.
South Africa defeated Australia by five wickets to claim its inaugural ICC Champions Trophy tournament title, becoming the first country ever to do so and also finishing as runners-up at two subsequent T20 World Cup tournaments.
Since then, the Proteas have enjoyed great success and currently sit at number one in both ODI and T20I cricket rankings.
South Africa’s current Test team, captained by Temba Bavuma, comprises 29 players: 10 batsmen, nine bowlers and six all-rounders. Hashim Amla leads an ODI squad of 24 players while Farhaan Behardien oversees T20I proceedings with 24. The selection criteria include form, fitness and availability – this list also features both uncapped and experienced players; updates occur after every match! Below is a table which lists every South African to have been given their Test cap since 1992 – which includes all those awarded their Test cap by South Africa since 1992!
Preparations
Kyle Verreyne hit the winning runs at Lord’s cricket ground in London and South Africa was overcome with joy. They had finally won one of cricket’s major tournaments- the World Test Championship (WTC). It was an exceptional triumph for a Proteas team which had underperformed recently.
The Proteas were expected to make an impressionful show at the WTC, but their preparation was derailed by India-Pakistan tensions which almost led to full-scale war. Over half of their players played in India’s Premier League which was suspended for 10 days until tensions between their countries subsided.
Even during their limited preparation for India tour, South African Proteas have shown great promise during preparations.
Their squad is composed of some very talented individuals. One player to keep an eye out for is Lungi Ngidi who recently replaced Kagiso Rabada due to injury; Lungi is an exciting prospect who has shown fantastic form with Titans so far this season.
Apart from Ngidi, the rest of the squad has also shown great promise in domestic tournaments. Ryan Rickelton has been particularly impressive during domestic matches while Bavuma has shown both good batting and bowling forms; additionally, both batsmen have formed strong partnerships in domestic matches which demonstrate their effectiveness as an unbroken unit.
As the Proteas prepare for their tour of India, it is vital that they maintain good form. This tour marks their first time back there after over 10 years – promising an exciting series consisting of six Test matches as well as three ODIs and five T20Is.
The Proteas will be eager to face off against one of the world’s premier teams – India. As defending champions, South Africa reached the semifinals last time out and were legitimate title contenders at that stage.
