Origins

The West Indies national cricket team, popularly dubbed “The Empire of Cricket”, boasts an illustrious and distinguished history of dominance. Comprised of players from fifteen Caribbean nations – Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada Saint Lucia Saint Kitts Nevis Trinidad Tobago as well as Sint Maarten and U.S.

Virgin Islands among others – including British Overseas Territories such as Sint Maarten – including Dutch constituent countries Sint Maarten and U.S Virgin Islands constituent countries – these 15 Caribbean nations come together under their national cricket body Cricket West Indies who oversee them both regionally as well as internationally governing bodies of their sport respectively.

Caribbean islands began playing inter-island cricket as early as the late 19th Century; however, it took until 1928 for them to officially join cricket’s global governing body, Imperial Cricket Conference. By 1929 West Indies’ inaugural official international Test match vs England took place and ended in a low scoring draw at Bridgetown.

By the time of World War II’s outbreak in Europe, however, West Indies had established themselves as an extremely formidable side with a formidable batting line-up and fearsome bowlers. Their 1950 Test series against England featured victories at both home and Manchester before winning an extremely high-scoring draw before coming home triumphant from their four-match series against India.

As the 1970s came to a close, West Indies cricket remained one of the strongest sides in the world. A new wave of talented players emerged during this time including Allan Border, Brian Lara, and Shivnarine Chanderpaul; eventually becoming one of the greatest Test match teams ever assembled.

Although the current Windies side may not be as formidable as in previous incarnations, their future looks promising for this popular and diverse sport in the West Indies. Their rich sporting culture draws fans who are amongst the most passionate worldwide, which will enable them to dominate both forms of the game – short form as well as long form.

Today, the Windies are one of the premier teams worldwide across all formats of cricket; both men’s and women’s Twenty20 cricket have them as defending champions. Home matches for these cricketers take place at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados which has become known as a hub for Caribbean cricket as well as hosting two ICC world cup finals.

On February 25, 2023, Sir Vivian Richards Stadium held its inaugural Test match since 2009. The West Indies triumphantly beat Sri Lanka by an innings and 217 runs inside four days – their largest margin of victory ever in Test cricket history. Kemar Roach led their success, becoming just the fifth West Indian fast bowler ever to achieve 300 Test wickets, joining an exclusive list of Courtney Walsh, Sir Curtly Ambrose, Malcolm Marshall and Lance Gibbs who all held that distinction prior to Roach joining their ranks.

Shai Hope produced two centuries for the Windies during their inaugural Test match on home turf – scoring both centuries within three innings of an innings for each innings in their Test match debut. His double century was only achieved twice previously by West Indies batsmen; its height making history. Only twice before had anyone managed such feat.

The Windies have made headlines for making some surprising decisions, such as permitting their players to use “no balls” on the field and their unconventional methods of dismissing opponents. Such behavior often makes other teams fear playing them.
