After their debut season in 2021, few gave Gujarat Titans much hope of succeeding. Yet Hardik Pandya proved otherwise and led them to an unlikely triumph as champions.
CVC Capital Partners owns this year’s franchise and are playing at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad for their home games. In this article, we will discuss the high lights of Gujarat Titans Vs Mumbai Indians Match Scorecard.
Mumbai Indians vs Gujarat Titans
The game, held in Ahmedabad, featured high scoring action between both teams. Mumbai Indians lost by six runs against Gujarat Titans at the end of an exciting contest; their third loss this season, while Gujarat Titans recorded their first win and moved up into fifth position on the points table.
Gujarat Titans won the toss and elected to bat first in this IPL match, but got off to an austere start after Ishan Kishan was out in his opening over, going nought for no runs in one over. Dewald Brevis and Rohit Sharma then added 77 runs for their third wicket partnership that gave hope of an unlikely success chase.
However, they were unable to capitalise on this early success when Brevis and Rohit suddenly went missing in quick succession, creating another major blow to their chances. Scoring quickly would have been vital in order to prevent another collapse from taking place.
Gujarat Titans faced a difficult challenge as they tried to stem the run-scoring rate of visitors, yet Sai Kishore, Rashid Khan and Spencer Johnson took key wickets that kept the pressure on hosts.
After much difficulty, Gujarat Titans managed to break the deadlock in the 17th over with Bhuvneshwar Kumar providing them with an important breakthrough, followed by some great bowling from Jasprit Bumrah who took two wickets off four overs – an achievement worthy of note!
Due to rain, the match was reduced to 18 overs but did not show any deterioration; both sides fought hard for every ball throughout an evenly contested contest.
After suffering an agonising final loss last year, MI needs to find their feet again this IPL. They’ll face an intense test against Gujarat Titans in their next matchup; an ideal opportunity for Shubman Gill’s captaincy as the youngster looks to build on an excellent start to this IPL season.
Mumbai Indians 169 for 7
Mumbai Indians failed to chase down a modest total of 169 runs at Narendra Madi Stadium in Ahmedabad within 20 overs, being all out for 162. Gujarat Titans opened up the points table with an emphatic six-run victory against Mumbai Indians in their season opening game, making history in an incredible battle that went down to the last delivery.
Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya chose to bowl first after winning the toss at Ahmedabad, to the delight of both players and spectators alike. Unfortunately for MI though, their batting quickly imploded towards the latter stages and they were unable to close down their run rate deficit.
Mumbai Indians boasts an imposing batting lineup featuring several talented players like Rohit Sharma, Ambati Rayudu and Kieron Pollard who can take the game away from opponents. Unfortunately though, their lack of quality batsmen at lower middle order has proven their Achilles heel this season.
Shubman Gill will take over as captain for his inaugural competitive match and is hoping to improve on his average of 23 with the bat. Mohit Sharma and Spencer Johnson have proven their abilities with the ball, while Ravindra Jadeja, Mitchell Santner and Moeen Ali must perform better if they wish to give a more adequate account of themselves.
Gujarat Titans 168 for 7
This match was full of subplots: Shubman Gill made an impressive IPL captain debut as one of the youngest captains ever; Jasprit Bumrah returned from missing all 2023 season; Rohit Sharma decided to step down as Mumbai Indians captain; Ishan Kishan returned in MI colours after leaving South Africa mid-tour.
Ishan Kishan’s return to IPL meant visiting the stadium where one of his most heartbreaking defeats occurred in last year’s final against Chennai Super Kings – not simply as a game but as an attempt to rebuild his career in this league.
Kishan started off well for Gujarat but quickly fell victim to its bowlers. Unable to adapt to their pace and length deliveries, he fell for a duck in the fifth over. Gujarat continued losing wickets consistently as Kishan lost wicket after wicket after wicket was lost.
But things looked promising when Gill and Sudharsan added 78 runs for the second wicket, both batsmen remaining cool as fours passed a short third fielder for fours. But in Lockie Ferguson’s next over, Gill was caught lbw by Lockie Ferguson with Sudharsan continuing his fine form, scoring 46 off 39 balls.
Sudharsan was out in the final over, edged to Kishan at backward point by Gujarat, who fell just six runs short of their target. This loss marked an important one for their visitors who had only ever won one match here prior to this one.

Ishan Kishan played some flamboyant strokes but couldn’t quite hit timing on his shots before succumbing for one last over to spinner Jasprit Bumrah delivered spinner Jasprit Bumrah delivery before Cameron Green got two boundarys but ultimately fell victim at one over last over to Jasprit Bumrah delivery before stay-on till end and scored half century!

But Dewald Brevis saved GT from defeat with sixes off Mohit Sharma as he helped GT reach an respectable total of 169/6.
