LSG vs PBKS
Following two straight defeats, LSG needed to win their remaining three matches and hope other results went their way in order to qualify for playoffs.
But even with Ayush Badoni playing an impressive 74 off 40 and Abdul Samad contributing 45 off 25, PBKS proved too strong on this evening and sent LSG packing.
PBKS were at their powerful best with the bat, quickly reaching 236 for 5 after winning the toss and opting to bowl first.
Though they lost Priyansh Arya early, their top order clicked like clockwork with Shashank Singh making 33 off 15 balls an invaluable contributor in helping reach such an imposing total.
LSG found it hard to settle with the ball as well, losing Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram in consecutive overs to Arshdeep Singh before Rishabh Pant reached 38 off 17 balls before being caught at deep cover by Ravi Bishnoi in their next over, leaving LSG in an increasingly tenuous situation.
Even after their collapse, LSG made an admirable fightback under Badoni and Samad’s batsmanship; but their batsmen always trailed behind their required rate due to PBKS’ bowlers tearing into them; when Samad fell in the 41st over it was clear they wouldn’t reach the target.
Late boundaries – including one off Shabheer Shah to close out the match – ensured PBKS secured their second consecutive win and moved up to second on the points table.
Their march towards playoffs will receive further encouragement when they face Delhi Capitals at home in their next match; whilst Super Giants hope to improve on their poor showing last season when they finished seventh without making it into play-off contention.
Predicted Playing XI
LSG and Punjab Kings’ IPL playoff showdown is of vital significance. Shreyas Iyer-led Punjab Kings currently lie fourth on the points table with 13 wins out of 10, while Rishabh Pant’s side currently stand sixth with 10 points; therefore they both need a win to maintain playoff hopes and both teams should field unchanged batting units for this encounter.
LSG’s batting has been inconsistent, but they can rely on Rishabh Pant’s impressive form. Rishabh and opener David Miller need to keep up their strong performances so as to maintain momentum; Aiden Markram, Nicholas Pooran and Mitchell Marsh may also step up and lead.
Aryan Juyal, Matthew Breetzke and Abdul Samad must start performing more consistently as lower order batsmen.
Punjab’s bowling has been an impressive asset this season, yet their lack of depth in their squad remains a cause for concern. They need more options in their pace department in order to meet upcoming schedules; since dropping Shardul Thakur, someone else needs to step up in his place;
Avesh Khan needs to improve upon her inconsistent play while Manimaran Siddharth must reduce leaking runs as soon as possible; Mayank Yadav could prove himself but first must prove his fitness before getting an opportunity at getting into their starting XI;
Both teams will hope for an ideal playing surface during their match. There may be some rain in the buildup but should clear during play – fast bowlers should benefit and the game should produce high scores from both teams!
