Mumbai Indians vs Gujarat Titans
The Mumbai Indians are an Indian Premier League cricket team based out of Mumbai, Maharashtra. Established in 2008 and owned by Reliance Industries through their wholly-owned subsidiary Indiawin Sports, they play their home matches at Wankhede Stadium (capacity 33,108).
Regarded as one of the strongest franchises in IPL with four championship wins under their belts.
The Gujarat Titans are a professional Twenty20 cricket club based out of Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Competing in both the Indian Premier League (IPL) and World T20 Cup tournaments respectively since their formation in 2008 under Rahul Johri as manager, the Gujarat Titans have seen success on an international stage since then.
They have proven their consistency over recent seasons by finishing as runners-up three times over five years and also reaching two quarter-finals on two other occasions. Many consider them among the favorites to win this year’s IPL title.
This season, the Titans are being led by former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and have played well so far in the Indian Premier League (IPL), currently sitting third on the points table.
Their goal is to claim their fourth consecutive IPL trophy – but first they must overcome an incredible challenge against Mumbai Indians.
MI got off to a slow start this season and were once on the verge of missing out entirely, yet gradually improved their performance and rose through the table, eventually taking first place with 16 points and boasting an exceptional Net Run Rate over their rivals.
Hardik Pandya-led side has unfortunately had to let go of Ryan Rickelton, Will Jacks and Corbin Bosch due to international commitments; Jonny Bairstow, Charith Asalanka and Richard Gleeson have been recruited in their place in order to ensure the team remains fit for playoff contention.
GT and MI have had an intense rivalry during this year’s IPL tournament, having met in 8 games so far and each winning 4 of those contests. Hardik Pandya will lead his side this time around and look to claim victory for them this time around.
Mumbai Indians 155 for 8
Mumbai Indians were limited to 155 for eight in an exciting thriller at Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday after suffering from Gujarat Titans bowler Vivek Patel’s expert bowling performance, leading them to 19 overs due to rain.
Will Jacks proved crucial as he reached his maiden half-century off 35 balls before sharing an unbroken 71-run stand with Suryakumar Yadav at number three before quickly losing three wickets when Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya and Naman Dhir left in quick succession before Corbin Bosch hit two sixes off Prasidh Krishna but fell four runs short.
Rain played an instrumental role in GT’s early control of MI’s innings as they reduced them to 97 for 2 after Rickleton made an early duck. Mohammed Siraj then removed Ryan’s middle stump leaving MI reeling.
Titans spinners staged an impressive bowling display to save them. Deepak Chahar took three wickets while Arshad Khan and Prasidh Krishna added two each to stop any further bleeding.
Spinners continued dominating in the second half, with Rashid Khan returning to form by taking four wickets at an excellent average of 4-0-21-1 while R Sai Kishore removed Suryakumar and Hardik Pandya respectively.
Gujarat, despite setbacks, kept fighting hard in their final over with a target of 15 off 12 for Rahul Tewatia’s side with 15 required off 12.
Tewatia hit two sixes from Rahul Tewatia to put Gujarat ahead, then Bumrah and Boult kept up the pressure until Coetzee was caught off the last ball as he attempted to sweep against slow deliveries – an impressive victory that keeps Gujarat fourth on the table.
Gujarat Titans 147 for 7
Gujarat Titans (GT) held their nerve in an eventful match characterized by rain breaks to claim the narrowest of victories against Mumbai Indians and end their six-match winning run.
After winning the toss and opting to field, GT’s bowlers found great seam movement to take regular wickets, such as Mohammed Siraj catching Ryan Rickleton off short cover second ball while Arshad Khan troubled Rohit Sharma before dismissing him for 7 off 8.
However, their top order faltered, making a stellar showing by their spinners but struggles from top-order batsmen against Mumbai Indians’ six match winning run.
Shubman Gill and Jos Buttler combined for a 72-run stand to help lead MI out of early difficulties and into a promising position, but MI’s top order fell short in meeting required run rates, thus being unable to post an impressive total score.
They slipped from 97/2 to 130/4 within four overs due to several missed catches and lapses in concentration, and when play resumed after 17th over they had fallen five runs behind DLS par score.
GT were looking like they might lose, until Bumrah and Boult took charge. Bumrah created seam movement with his old ball to pin down Will Jacks leg before nailing him with an inside-out shot; Boult squeezed Suryakumar Yadav against his defences to catch him at long off.
Before the rain arrived again, they each picked up two more wickets before picking up two each before it resumed its torrential downpour.
Deepak Chahar conceded four fours and sixes to leave GT three short of their target; then bowled a no-ball that missed its throwoff line, handing GT victory by just three runs!
Incredibly exciting cricket action ensued and ensured GT remain top of their league table; captain Gill lauded Rashid Khan who has slowly but surely returned from injury as having impressed him during his return since his return from injury!
He heaped praise upon Rashid Khan who is gradually recovering his form post injury as well as heaped praise upon leg-spinner Rashid Khan himself who is slowly coming into form again following injuries sustained earlier on this tournament run-up against team USA who have also seen some hiccupping contests due to rain interruptions which rendered games cease-start contests due to wet outfield cricket!
Mumbai Indians win by 3 wickets
Mumbai Indians defeated the Gujarat Titans by three wickets to advance to the CLT20 Qualifier Round final against Chennai Super Kings and secure their place.
It was an exciting contest, with both sides hitting impressive totals. Mumbai Indians bowling performed admirably in restricting run-chases but their batting struggled against pressure; Hardik Pandya’s missed run-out at the final ball cost them dearly in this game.
At the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, they won the toss and elected to field first. Tilak Verma’s 59-ball innings helped increase their score by more than 30 runs while Suryakumar Yadav, Ryan Rickelton and Naman Dhir also contributed useful scores before Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult’s bowling unleashed its devastating effects and dismantled their middle order batting line-up.
Delhi appeared poised to change their poor run-chase record after the rain delay, only for Abishek Porel and Jos Buttler to be dismissed quickly after each other. Karun Nair then caused Delhi problems with an exceptional 40-ball 89 that helped his side retake control.
However, the hosts were unable to capitalize on their lead and lost wickets regularly as their batting collapsed under pressure. The match then turned into an exciting battle as both teams needed to win three out of the last four overs for qualification into the final.
Rahul Tewatia and Gerald Coetzee had only two balls remaining when Chahar bowled his full delivery which Tewatia lofted over long-off for four to bring him on strike and give the hosts three runs from two balls remaining. A no-ball from Chahar then changed it into two runs off one delivery.
Tewatia mistimed his short one and was caught at square leg after an 88-ball innings. Coetzee attempted a big shot but was bowled by a yorker. With both teams tied at 1 wicket each, the match concluded in dramatic fashion as Mumbai won by one wicket.
