On their opening drive from their 14-yard line, De’Von Achane ran for a 61-yard run to put the Dolphins up 3-0 before kicker Jason Sanders hit a 26-yard field goal to end the first quarter.
The Jets defense must stop Jonnu Smith of the Dolphins from making big plays, while safety Jevon Holland and cornerback Jalen Ramsey must force turnovers and create turnover opportunities.

Statistical Comparisons
The New York Jets and Miami Dolphins share the longest-standing rivalry in NFL history, meeting 118 times during regular season play and tied at 61-56-1. On December 8, Miami triumphed when Jonnu Smith caught an overtime touchdown pass for them to claim victory over their crosstown foes.
The Jets enter this matchup at 4-12 and must win to keep their playoff hopes alive. They currently sit seventh in the AFC East and would need a win against Miami and other favorable results to advance. Unfortunately for them, cornerback Sauce Gardner suffered an ACL tear during Week 17 and will miss this game due to injury.
After an uneventful first quarter, the Jets quickly took control of the second as running back De’Von Achane ran 61 yards down to the three-yard line to set up a first and goal opportunity for Miami that needed to convert quickly in order to extend their drive further.
However, the Jets defense was able to force a punt. On their next possession, however, the Dolphins went three and out and allowed another short punt from which the Jets drove down field and into red zone where Matt Forte scored for a 7-3 lead.
In the third quarter, both teams traded field goals before the Jets quickly increased their lead with an extended pass from QB Ken O’Donnell to wide receiver Jeff Graham for a two-point conversion. Later in the quarter, O’Donnell forced another Dolphins fumble at their 29-yard line before throwing deep to Keyshawn Johnson who out-jumped their entire defense for another O’Donnell throw that made it 27-14 Jets victory.
In the fourth quarter, O’Donnell connected with Graham again on another long touchdown pass to extend their advantage to 34-14. As Dolphins tried to rally, rookie RB Kalen Ballage’s end zone fumble gave the Jets some breathing room and ultimately the win – as well as being Jason Taylor’s final home game as an opposing safety.
Offense
At their first encounter, both teams combined for 884 total yards and 10 touchdown passes – an enthralling contest which the Jets eventually won 31-17. On this date, Ron Koslow was coaching the Dolphins who were playing at Joe Robbie Stadium (now Hard Rock Stadium).
The Jets defense was dominant throughout the game. On their opening drive, Haason Reddick forced quarterback Aaron Rodgers into fumbling which Quincy Williams recovered before scoring on five-yard run by Leon Washington for five points in just eight plays en route to a 17-6 advantage at halftime.
However, the Dolphins responded with an impressive 17-play, 73-yard drive culminating in Jay Fiedler throwing a three-yard touchdown pass to Leslie Shepherd tying up the game 30-30 with just under two minutes remaining in regulation time.
On their respective next possessions, both teams traded punts before New York took the lead for good with a 42-yard field goal from kicker Nick Folk. Miami responded with an efficient seven-play drive of 65 yards culminating in kicker Dan Carpenter kicking a 52-yard field goal to take back control.
Keyshawn Johnson made a stunning play when he caught and ran for 45 yards despite outjumping all of Dolphins secondary players to make a catch that put them up 36-27 at halftime. They added another 30-yard field goal late in fourth quarter for good measure.
However, in the final minute of play, defense collapsed dramatically. On 3rd and goal at 29, safety Jamar Taylor committed an offensive pass interference penalty which gave Miami possession at 8. However, their drive faltered when they failed to convert on their two-point conversion attempt and eventually the game went into overtime – eventually lost by 32-26 as Chad Pennington was sacked by defensive tackle Zach Sieler who registered three sacks while linebacker Jordyn Brooks recorded one sack and one pass deflection; in their absence were injured defensive tackles Kader Kohou and Jevon Holland;
Defense
After taking their inaugural matchup against New York in Week 1, the Dolphins were defeated en masse in Round 2, scoring 23 points to allow Joe Namath and the Jets’ defense to rack up 45 total points for an easy victory.
At their second meeting of 2018, these teams met in a battle for AFC East control. Both had won five games prior to entering, giving each a good shot at making a playoff push. A rainy field held both offenses back for most of the game before Dolphins kicker Olindo Mare hit a 23-yard field goal to give his team an early 30-7 advantage; Vinny Testaverde from Jets managed to penetrate Dolphins defense and throw two touchdown passes, cutting the deficit down to 27-20 with just three minutes remaining in this contest.
Testaverde’s second touchdown pass went to wide receiver Laveranues Coles and two-yard touchdown run by running back Jermaine Wiggins was followed by another touchdown, this one by Jets CB AJ Duhe in the end zone fumbling, set off an incredible final minute comeback that led to Miami winning 31-23 and cost the Jets their playoff berth as well as leading to their head coach Walt Michaels being dismissed from his post.
The Jets’ C.J. Mosley (neck), OL Tyron Smith (neck), Haason Reddick (shoulder), RB Zack Bailey (abdomen), Leki Fotu (knee) are all out, while Kendall Fuller, Anthony Walker and CB Sauce Gardner may return. Tyus Bowser and DE Jason Taylor remain questionable for this game while DE Jason Taylor remains probable; on the Dolphins side DL Ndamukong Suh (shoulder), Davone Bess (shoulder), Jonathan Taylor and TE Charles Clay could come back in as backup QB should it take place on Sunday. If he returns as backup QB Tua Tagovailoa would return as backup QB with him eligible to return as backup QB; should this game take place this Sunday he would return as backup QB Tua Tagovailoa would also return eligible as backup QB Tua Tagovailoa could return as backup quarterback Tua Tagovailoa could return – this could happen with him returning as backup QB due to knee injury sustained last week while Tua Tagovailoa would return as backup QB (i would return as backup he would be eligible to return). If this game takes place this Sunday he may return as backup QB.
Special Teams
The Miami Dolphins possess many talented skill position players. However, when it comes to actually getting them on the ground for play action they’re an unmitigated failure. On Sunday against New York Jets they continued this alarming trend by missing numerous tackle attempts and even making veteran Aaron Rodgers look youthful at times!
The Dolphins defense showed its strengths early, while their special teams unit provided their greatest chance for comeback in the second half. Thanks to kickoff returner Malik Washington and blocked punter Terence Fede’s performance they found themselves with prime field position with under a minute remaining.
After an unsuccessful Jets possession, Miami started their third quarter with their initial scoring drive of the night. On their second play of this scoring drive, quarterback Tyler Huntley connected with tight end David Paul on a seven-yard pass for first down, followed two plays later by wide receiver Tyreek Hill for an easy 10-yard touchdown catch that put Miami behind only by five points at halftime. With this successful two-point conversion attempt completed successfully by Miami, they trailed only five points.
The Jets responded with another three-and-out possession, prompting Dolphins’ doubts whether or not they could keep pace with their opponent’s prolific passing attack. On their next drive however, Huntley found Waddle with a 20-yard touchdown reception before finding Hill again for another 10-yard score – leading them to victory 23-15 with just nine minutes remaining in the game.
However, as the Dolphins still had work to do on their rushing defense, Jalen Ramsey provided them with a huge boost when he burst through and blew up Adams on two consecutive double pass attempts, forcing an incomplete pass and forcing an incomplete screen attempt from Adams on 3rd down and 11 from Ramsey; consequently forcing Jay Feely’s 42 yard field goal as their sole score of the final two minutes of play.
