Lineups
Rangers will hope that a victory against their old rivals, Celtic, can help get back on the right path this season. After only winning one league game so far and suffering defeat against Liverpool in the EFL Cup, Glasgow giants must improve quickly if they want to avoid being drawn into an early relegation battle.
Rangers remain in the top half of the league despite their poor form and will aim to do just that with a win against Manchester United on Saturday. Rangers have won four out of their eight meetings with United, making them clear favorites to triumph once more in this encounter.
Rangers may be without Clark Robertson and Joe Shaughnessy due to injuries, but have plenty of options at centre-back to select from – something they showed by fielding an impressive lineup in their 2-1 EFL Cup win against Barnsley; this approach should continue against Manchester United.
Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is likely to shuffle and alter the team that began the 3-0 defeat of Southampton, after having suffered from key players leaving in the summer window and his squad being relatively thin. New signings Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui may all feature at some point while new goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale should maintain his spot over Jordan Pickford for now.
Midfield-wise, he could hand starts to Lisandro Martinez and Christian Eriksen. Ugarte may make his first start while Josh Zirkzee could make his full debut. Up front, Andre Onana and Jadon Sancho should likely retain their positions.
Southampton have struggled since returning to the Premier League following their promotion from Championship playoffs, only winning one of their opening three league matches and need to start collecting points quickly so as to avoid dropping back down into Championship. Ross Stewart and Kamaldeen Sulemana should both feature against Manchester United while Gavin Bazunu is expected to remain absent due to an injury issue.
Injury Updates
Manchester United will look to rebound from their surprise 1-0 defeat to Rosenborg in their pre-season opening friendly, after struggling to put together any meaningful attacks during most of the encounter in Norway and only managing a late winner from Noah Holm. United boss Erik ten Hag is likely to rotate his squad for this game and could welcome back Scott McTominay after returning from injury earlier this week; Harry Maguire may also feature after making significant strides towards recovery from muscle problems that kept him sidelined at the end of last season and Euro 2024.
Rangers will look to build upon their strong start to summer under Manager Philippe Clement. After fielding an impressive side for their visit to Ajax in Amsterdam, their side should arrive at Murrayfield with confidence in tow. New signings Jefte and Mohamed Diomande may feature after impressing for Ajax; right-back James Tavernier may miss out after leaving for Turkish giants Trabzonspor; however goalkeeper Jack Butland should still feature given limited game time this season.
John Lundstram and Borna Barisic will likely not feature for The Gers this season due to having joined Trabzonspor. Leny Yoro remains injured from being knocked unconscious against Ajax on June 17 and needs more time before playing against Hearts on August 3 in their league opener.
As for Tom Lawrence and Danilo, both scored goals against Ajax to keep their places, while Danilo may return after missing the Champions League qualifier against Dynamo Kyiv due to knee pain. On the visiting side, however, Kobbie Mainoo, Lisandro Martinez and Alejandro Garnacho may all currently out due to injuries.
Predictions
Manchester United will play their second of three friendly matches against Rangers this afternoon at Murrayfield in Scotland, taking on an opponent still finding its feet under Philippe Clement. Following an opening pre-season loss against Rosenborg, Rangers will look for revenge by winning this encounter against United.
No team enters this match with much confidence as both clubs have struggled in their opening pre-season games, particularly Manchester United who has yet to claim victory while Rangers has provided little of note during their two matches thus far.
Predicting what sort of performance either club will produce in this friendly is difficult as both are fielding youth players for this contest. That will likely result in flexible approaches from both managers, creating fluidity in play.
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is expected to make at least two changes from his side that started last Tuesday’s 4-0 demolition of Barnsley as they prepare for some larger friendlies in the coming days. The Dutchman could opt for Daichi Kamada and Chris Richards in place of Cheick Doucoure and Nathaniel Clyne while summer recruit Maxence Lacroix remains in defensive midfield role; Eberechi Eze and Jean-Philippe Mateta could compete for positions up front alongside Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford’s menacing combination up front alongside them.
Philippe Clement of Rangers will likely make at least four changes from their side that won the Premier Sports Cup quarter-final against Ross County, with Jack Butland keeping his position between the sticks, supported by James Tavernier, John Souttar Leon Balogun Connor Barron plus forwards Jefte Janer Tom Lawrence Cyriel Dessers being offered starts.
This game will be challenging to predict as neither team have won their opening pre-season fixtures yet and neither have shown much promise during previous meetings. It is worth remembering, though, that Palace did the league double over United last season at Selhurst Park and won both meetings since. We therefore predict a 2-1 victory for Palace. Kick off is at 4.pm BST at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh.
