Afghanistan vs South Africa
South Africa and Afghanistan produced one of the most riveting matches in T20 World Cup history as they battled it out at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium for dominance by only four runs.
Both sides reached level scores on 187 apiece before not one but two Super Overs were necessary before South Africa edged ahead with Quinton de Kock achieving half-centuries while Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s 42-ball 84 which featured sixes at every ball saw them fall four runs short despite Gurbaz’s efforts – leaving one memorable for sure.
South African batsmen have taken to bowling Afghanistan into submission. Mujeeb Ur Rahman’s opening over produced 17 runs as de Kock hit both balls to the boundary before cutting one away to score four more runs off it before being caught at long-on by Rashid Khan shortly thereafter.
George Linde struck an incredible six in the next over, followed by Ibrahim Zadran’s couple of fours. Linde’s hit was remarkable – making space to take it on up and clear the long-off fence for an astounding six.
The second over was relatively uneventful with only 11 runs coming off it as South Africa reached 155 for 4 after 10 overs. But South Africa were given an edge after being awarded a leg-before decision against Rahmanullah Gurbaz; South Africa quickly took their positions with 19 needed off 12 balls needed off Rahmanullah Gurbaz to regain their advantage and secure victory.
South Africa are taking full advantage of a pitch that is showing some turn, with Aiden Markram appearing especially dangerous and David Miller and Tristan Stubbs also looking strong.
A win here would likely secure their advancement to Super Eights Group D while defeat could potentially send them home early against New Zealand; hence their favorite status here and following their brilliant outing against Canada in their opener.
Toss
South Africa emerged victorious against Afghanistan in the second Super Over of their T20 World Cup match-up, after an exciting tie.
Quinton de Kock and Ryan Rickelton both struck fifties for South Africa but Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s unbeaten 84 off 42 balls kept Afghanistan competitive throughout. Azmatullah Omarzai and Rashid Khan cameo performances also kept Afghanistan within reach.
Proteas won the toss and elected to bowl first on an unforgiving pitch which hasn’t favoured either batsmen or bowlers so far in this tournament.
Although slightly slower than what helped New Zealand chase down 183 on day 1, that might benefit South African spinners more.
South Africa made an impressive start, taking three wickets in the opening over through Ngidi, Stubbs and Moosekielsema. However, after some confusion resulted in De Kock being run out off his second ball, Ahmed Shehzad hit one over leaping long-on for six to give Afghanistan some momentum.
But Ngidi quickly responded and had Shehzad caught at long-on off his third delivery, while Sediqullah Atal was caught behind on his fourth.
Shehzad had intended to loft a straighter ball but misjudged its trajectory and was caught by one of the tallest players on the field – an excellent wicket for Ngidi!
Afghanistan sent in their tailenders for one last try at victory and Noor Ahmad responded quickly by hitting two off three balls from Maharaj, including an upper-cut short ball that cleared the rope to cheers from long-on spectators.
But misjudging an on-pace slot ball meant being caught at point and dropping an easy single as their deficit crept closer towards 13 runs.
After one run from the final ball of an over, we are entering into the second Super Over. South Africa need six runs from Kagiso Rabada for them to win this match; Kagiso Rabada may provide them with their chance.
Match Predictions
South Africa comes into this game as slight favorites due to their pace attack and batting depth, yet Afghanistan’s spin-heavy attack could pose a formidable challenge against any top side in these conditions and could prove troublesome to the Proteas’ cause.
After defeating Canada in their opening match, South African will head into this contest with confidence. Their batting lineup boasts top players like Aiden Markram, Quinton de Kock and David Miller as proven match winners; plus Tristan Stubbs should ensure they can post a big total score.
Afghanistan will look to recover from their five-wicket defeat against New Zealand by showing impressive intent in their opening match and producing an effective performance against one of the top T20 teams in the world.
As two teams from each group advance to the Super Eight stage, this matchup could have significant ramifications. A win for South Africa could vault them to the top of their group while defeat for Afghanistan could make qualification almost impossible.
Ahmedabad pitches present both batsmen and bowlers with an equal challenge. Early on, fast bowlers may be able to achieve some swing and carry, while as the game goes on the surface slows down gradually and thus providing spinners an opportunity to dominate as the match moves toward its conclusion.
On Wednesday morning at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, weather forecasters expect temperatures in the high 20s for this matchup.
Scorecard
The match was an intense, nail-biting thriller which ended in a tie. Now both teams will meet up again for an explosive Super Over. South Africa had an opportunity to win in the first Super Over, but due to run-out and no-ball by Kagiso Rabada they could only defend 12 runs before another run-out and no-ball from Rabada left them short by one single run; only an extremely courageous batsman would attempt scoring off two balls left unplayed; South Africa never attempted this attempt!
In the third and final super over, teams will compete to score as many runs off of four overs remaining. South Africa have already won two of their matches; victory here will all but guarantee them a spot in the quarter-finals; however, failure would put them in danger of exiting early from tournament. Should they lose this matchup against Canada or UAE as well, to remain in contention for top two finish.
Lungi Ngidi began the super over for South Africa with an excellent spell. At first it looked as though Afghanistan would only reach subpar scores; but Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Azmatullah Omarzai made sure this didn’t happen.
Ball 1: Gurbaz starts his season off right by hitting an excellent long ball sliced for six by Gurbaz down to the ground – a fantastic start.
Two balls later: Stubbs makes another good hit to score four runs off a straight delivery which he cuts for four over his left pad, keeping Afghanistan well placed.
Maharaj was left needing 13 off the final ball, when Ngidi sent out another wide. Gurbaz missed it but hit back for six the next delivery to ensure a tie. An incredible innings was scored by Gurbaz who scored an unbelievable 84 off 42 deliveries!
