Vidarbha – 379 (Danish Malewar 153 & Karun Nair 86)

Vidarbha and Kerala met at Nagpur’s VCA Stadium to contest the final of the Ranji Trophy and put on a show of domestic talent that showcased India’s depth in cricket. Both teams gave stellar performances during an exhilarating contest that showcased individual stars – however Vidarbha ultimately triumphed, becoming only team ever to claim three titles in history!

After an inauspicious start, Danish Malewar and Karun Nair joined forces in an unbroken partnership of 215 to put the home team into total control at 379/3 after Day three. Their dogged batting kept momentum moving forward despite regular wicket losses; Nair nearly reached his century while Malewar’s efforts helped give two-time winners an important 37-run advantage.

Kerala had difficulty in their second innings finding an acceptable balance of caution and aggression, even after Sachin Baby scored an exceptional 98 run knock. They could not get on top of their run chase and could only manage 438 for 7.

But, it was far from over for the inaugural finalists as they managed to keep pace with their hosts despite an unfortunate mix-up between Nair and Malewar at a run-a-ball that cost them dearly, but still gave them an important advantage in the match.

The fourth day was an anxious one for both sides as the wicket showed signs of life. The ball had some turn and variable bounce that proved challenging to bat on. Nonetheless, visitors’ bowlers did well to contain damage; MD Nidheesh and Eden Apple Tom each took two wickets each to stop Kerala from making breakthrough.

Harsh Dubey made history when he took 3 for 88 in one season for Harsh Dubey to claim a record. Darshan Nalkande and Parth Rekhade also contributed with wickets; unfortunately though they couldn’t capitalize on good starts and form big partnerships; thus leading them into defeat by only narrow margins; at the conclusion of an incredible five-day encounter, players shook hands before parting ways at last.

Vidarbha’s bowlers did well to restrict Kerala’s run-scoring momentum in the first innings, but a remarkable partnership between Danish Malewar and Karun Nair changed the course of play significantly. Malewar, an emerging young batsman with bright future prospects, played an outstanding knock of 153 runs off 282 balls while Nair displayed remarkable composure to not miss out on scoring his maiden hundred.

Kerala began their second innings by losing Rohan Kunnummal and Akshay Chandran early, but Ahammed Imran and Sachin Baby kept things together. But Baby’s dismissal for 98 off 235 balls ended their hopes of an unlikely comeback; his attempt at slogging Jalaj Saxena to short midwicket resulted in being trapped leg before wicket and giving Vidarbha the crucial first innings lead.

On Day 3, Vidarbha’s lower order batsmen showed great grit in order to keep scoring runs. Harsh Dubey, who picked up three wickets in their opening innings, continued his excellent bowling to decrease Kerala’s batting strength while Apple Tom, Akshay Karnewar and Nachiket Bhute contributed runs as Vidarbha reached 248/6 in their first innings.

Karun Nair may have been at the heart of Kerala’s Ranji Trophy campaign had fate been different two seasons ago; instead he has found himself playing an integral part of Vidarbha’s attempt to win their third championship title with an outstanding unbeaten 132 innings to put Vidarbha into an early lead on day four at Nagpur’s VCA Stadium – and six wickets remaining to spare!

Nair scored his magnificent century off 259 balls as he mixed defence and precise shot-making to produce it in only 364 deliveries. Together with Danish Malewar (unbeaten on 148) they formed a 216-run fourth wicket stand to help their hosts recover from an early setback.

Kerala’s bowlers led by Nedumankuzhy Basil, MD Nidheesh, and Eden Apple Tom worked tirelessly to stop Vidarbha from dominating. But its batsmen, especially Nair and Malewar, showed they possessed superiority.

Nair made history again this season when he produced an outstanding red-ball performance in his second innings, comprising of five deliveries with 10 boundaries and five sixes to pass 8,000 first-class runs en route to an unprecedented record year for him in all forms of cricket.

Vidarbha batsmen Amit Sarwate (78) and Vikram Sheth (215 runs in partnership) carried Vidarbha to 254-4 at stumps on Wednesday evening, laying an important foundation.

Nair was run-out at an important juncture, changing the tide in favour of Vidarbha while his 86-ball knock served as an inspiring display of determination.

Kerala were on course for first-class victory until Nair’s departure marked their downfall and they fell short by just three runs. Nair attempted to steal a run but Rohan Kunnummal at second slip swiftly retrieved and threw back. Vidarbha celebrated with joyous home crowd, tossing sand around and picking up soil as players ran around celebrating victory.

Kerala – 386 (Ravikumar Samarth 60 & Harsh Dubey 3/38)

Vidarbha won a nail-biting Ranji Trophy final with their first-innings lead, thanks to Denmark Malewar and Karun Nair’s brilliant batting performances, while Harsh Dubey and Darshan Nalkande’s disciplined bowling put Kerala out of reach of winning. When Sachin Baby misjudged his final stroke for an untimely dismissal after an impressive 98-ball innings he gave Vidarbha the edge they needed.

Jalaj Saxena and MD Nidheesh struck quickly to remove Rekhade and Shorey early, but an excellent 182-run third-wicket stand between Malewar and Nair restored equilibrium. Nair’s stunning century combined defence with precise shot making, while Yash Rathod contributed an excellent 83. Unfortunately, Kerala were ultimately bowled out for 342 in 125 overs, handing Vidarbha an advantage of 37 runs.

Kerala openers Rohan Kunnummal and Akshay Chandran were dismissed cheaply by Darshan Nalkande, who went on to take two more wickets and complete his hat-trick. Captain Rohan Chandran and Abhishek Sharma fought hard to keep Kerala competitive; unfortunately when Sachin Baby was caught at deep midwicket off Aditya Sarwate to miss out on scoring his century, it was too late.

Vidarbha won the match, securing their third consecutive championship title in four seasons. Their blend of talent, including youngster Malewar Dubey as well as veterans like Nair and Akshay Wadkar makes them formidable opponents in domestic cricket.
