T20I

West Indies sent out an unmistakable signal on Tuesday at Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, Gros Islet in Saint Lucia that they are here to win the T20 World Cup by crushing Afghanistan by 104 runs in an one-sided match at Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, Gros Islet. Rovman Powell led team showed no mercy as they completed group stage unbeaten and secured top seeding for Super 8 phase play.

The Windies had a slow start but quickly found their rhythm with the bat, led by Nicholas Pooran’s remarkable 98 off 51 balls – the highest individual score of this tournament and also its highest team total ever reached in 20 overs; additionally they scored 92 runs during their initial six over powerplay period – the highest total ever achieved at any T20 World Cup tournament!

Windies bowlers were equally impressive with both spinners and fast bowlers. Akeal Hosein stood out, taking two wickets within his first two overs while Obed McCoy, Gudakesh Motie and Alzarri Joseph also claimed important scalps.

After just five overs, the West Indies had already amassed an unprecedented 91-run advantage – thanks largely to Pooran’s majestic hitting. They then proceeded to run up an even greater total by crushing Afghani batsmen for 114 runs in 16.2 overs.

Windies won their fourth match of this tournament after beating New Zealand by 13 runs and Papua New Guinea by seven wickets respectively. Afghanistan national cricket team will face New Zealand national cricket team for their last Group C clash on Wednesday (June 21).

West Indies have won four of the five T20Is between them and India since 2016, only losing to them once at home in 2016. Unfortunately, however, Windies have suffered two defeats against Asia since 2016.

The T20I will mark the seventh time West Indies and Afghanistan have faced each other in this format, and three out of four matches have been won by West Indies; this match marks their homecoming for their debut game as hosts before Super 8 phase starts – providing both sides an opportunity to gain momentum before starting Phase 2. St Lucia will host its inaugural match ever in this World Cup tournament!

ODI

West Indies have been unbeaten so far at the 2024 ICC World Cup and come into this match against Afghanistan knowing victory would all but secure their passage into the Super 8 stage. Afghanistan were second in their group behind Ireland but have not had such an impressive showing thus far and will aim for a top two finish to directly qualify for quarter-finals.

This match will take place at Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in Gros Islet, Saint Lucia and will start at 6:00 AM IST. It marks the first time these two sides have met in an ODI match.

Before, these two sides met in T20I format and the Windies took an edge, holding on by just four runs in their head-to-head battle. Nicholas Pooran scored eight sixes against Azmatullah Omarzai in one over of their match in which was held; that number marks joint highest total by any batsman ever in any innings during T20Is, surpassing Chris Gayle’s previous mark of 124 sixes by seven sixes!

Afghanistan have won all three group matches thus far in the tournament, including an impressive 125-run win over Uganda at Providence Stadium in Guyana and then beating New Zealand with ease at Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad to seal their spot in the Super 8.

West Indies have also shown impressive form, defeating Papua New Guinea by five wickets before coasting to a seven-wicket win against England at Sir Vivian Alexander Stadium in Grenada. Rovman Powell (c), Shimron Hetmyer, Johnson Charles, Alzarri Joseph Shai Hope Sherfane Rutherford Akeal Hosein Gudakesh Motie Obed McCoy are expected to all feature prominently for Windies.

Although this match will determine who wins Group C, its outcome won’t alter overall standings as seeding for the Super 8 stage was set prior to tournament’s beginning. While both teams will look to keep their momentum intact in this match-up, both will want to maintain it ahead of the final phase of competition where only one team can claim victory and become champions of ICC T20 World Cup 2018. Whoever emerges victorious will also become world champs! Runner-up will receive the ICC T20I World Cup bronze medal and will receive $5,000, while winners will take home $30,000 prize. Both ICC T20 World Cup Final tickets will also be included as part of this prize, plus they’ll get free flights to Mumbai where the final takes place – plus winners get an increased share of tournament broadcast revenues thanks to sponsors such as Global Initiative for Children, Fleming Foundation Comic Relief and William and Flora Hewlett Foundation among many more.
