Ranji Trophy

The Ranji Trophy is India’s domestic first-class cricket competition for state teams and was named in honour of legendary batsman Ranjit Singh. As such, it has given many Indian cricketers their first taste of international competition – be it England or Australia as well as representing their national side.

Ranji Trophy Competition takes place annually and consists of 135 matches played across four groups, with the winners moving on to the knockout stages and usually culminating in a five-day game for its grand final. Teams from different regions’ cricket boards, government organizations and other organizations compete against one another to take home this coveted trophy, awarded both with plaques and caps worn by their captain for the duration of season.

Bihar is a formidable team and their recent results in the Ranji Trophy have been impressive. After defeating Manipur in their plate group match and suffering a narrow nine-wicket defeat against Mumbai in their quarter-final encounter, Bihar rebounded by winning their semi-final match against Nagaland to make the top four and make an unlikely run at success this time around.

Bihar has had success competing in another domestic tournament, the Vijay Hazare Trophy, under coach Pragyan Ojha and under player/coach Sakibul Gani with experienced players such as Bhashkar Dubey, Ayush Loharuka and Bipin Saurabh as well as several up-and-coming young talent such as Bipin Saurabh. Most recently they defeated Nagaland and Mizoram to advance to the semi-finals of this tournament.

Sakibul Gani has been the star batsman so far in this tournament for Bihar. Recently selected to India’s U-19 squad for World Cup competition, he can lead Bihar to victory as well.

Harsh Vardhan, President of Bihar Cricket Association (BCA), was delighted by the performance of Bihar cricket team and applauded them on their hard work. He noted that their players displayed impressive mental strength, resilience, character development and unity during competition; further complimenting them for their dedication and unity and anticipating that there would be great success ahead for Bihar cricket team in future competitions. BCA president also expressed its hope that Bihar team would experience new levels of success under new management in coming seasons.

Vijay Hazare Trophy

The Vijay Hazare Trophy is an India-wide tournament for teams. As the premier domestic competition, this annual event attracts 38 teams competing at its apex, divided into four elite groups and one plate group with the top five from each qualifying for quarter-final stage play-offs.

In 2025-26, there were many remarkable milestones achieved within List A cricket. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi became the youngest ever List A batsman when he made 190 against Arunachal Pradesh on his List A debut and set an amazing world record of scoring 100 runs at only 14 years and 272 days – surpassing Zahoor Elahi who achieved this feat when scoring one at 15 years and 209 days back in 1986.

Within half a day, three players had broken Yusuf Pathan’s record for fastest List A hundred since 2002 – Anmolpreet Singh scored his 102 off 36 balls while Ishan Kishan posted 51-ball century for Punjab while Sachin Tendulkar made 34-ball century in Mumbai to go past previous mark of 40 balls.

This season also witnessed an all-time record number of centuries scored on one day – 22 on December 24. Karnataka and Vidarbha batters led the charge, scoring seven centuries each. Mayank Agarwal set another milestone during this tournament by becoming the first Indian ever to score 20 List A hundreds in only 129 innings!

As testament to the quality of cricket at this tournament, it has attracted so many milestones – making the competition more enticing to fans and helping spread it across India. Furthermore, BCCI increased the match fees making this competition more financially appealing with other lucrative events such as IPL.

It is imperative that the BCCI widen the reach of this tournament. Bihar, with the third-highest population in India, was initially neglected by this tournament until recently. While Uttarakhand and Chhattisgarh both boast their own state teams playing domestic cricket, Bihar has struggled for many years to receive adequate recognition by this organization resulting in less enthusiasm among young players from its north-eastern region, making improvement all the more necessary for growth and interest from youth players in Bihar.

Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy

Domestic tournaments such as the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy are essential to Indian cricket because they give smaller states an opportunity to compete on a national stage and gain national recognition and improve their chances of selection for international matches. All-rounders like Anukul Roy from Bihar stand out among these competitions due to their dual contributions with bat and ball; anukul Roy even recently won Player of the Tournament Award at Syed Mushtaq Ali Twenty20 Trophy due to his exceptional all-round performance!

India’s 38 domestic teams compete annually in a 20-match series for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, hosted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and named after an Indian Test cricketer – Mumbai currently reigns supreme, while Tamil Nadu holds the record with three championship titles under their belts.

The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy marks the kick-off of Indian cricket season each November/December and features all 38 teams in India. As India’s highest level domestic T20 competition and feeder tournament for their national T20 squad, this competition draws teams from across India.

Jharkhand had long been considered an underperforming team on the domestic cricket stage. But this year was different; the state team managed to claim their maiden Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy victory by defeating Haryana in Pune’s final. It was an astonishing triumph for an underdog team like Jharkhand, representing their hard work and perseverance on this long journey towards international cricket success.
